I used to have plex on a windows PC but its C:\ crashed. I pulled the media drive out into another computer, hooked an external drive to the my nightgear r9000 router, I copied all my Plex media over to it and then installed plex server on the router. Everything seemed to work fine and pick up fine. However, after a couple weeks one of the files wouldnt play. It had a negative size and you cannot do anythign with the file, you cannot replace it, you cannot delete it. I thought it a fluke, maybe the file copied over that way, but the file is on the original computer without any corruption. At the time i checked all my other media files, none had this issue. Its now been on this setup for a while, and i am trying to ensure i have correct backups of my files, i am now 10 or so files corrupted in the same manner. There is nothing i can do to correct the media files, the only thing i can do, is create a new folder, move all the good files to the new media folder, redirect plex library to the new folder, and leave the old folder, with its corruped files. I then have to pull good files from back ups to put out there or re-rip files.
scans of the external drive show no issues, all my other personal files on the drive are not corrupt. The hard drive is not very old so the only thing i can manage to come up with, is that over time, in some specific instance, plex is somehow corrupting said files. The corruption and fix is obtuse, and i dont know how to identify the moment when the files get corrupted.
For example my kids love to watch frozen, they watched over and over again, till one day, it simply doesnt play. I go look at the file and it now has a negative size. Normally when a file is corrupted, you can simply delete it and replace it, in this case, something is corrupting it so bad that windows, nor dos can deal with it.
