Plex apps for smart TVs should automatically block Automatic Content Recognition and other tracking tactics/metrics. We should be able to turn off all tracking that the TV may attempt. Modern life would feel less dystopian if Plex were capable of muting the audio and/or blacking the whole screen for the service the TV is running to gather that data.
You can bet that
- apps which attempt to do this will get ousted from the app store of the TV platform. So there won’t be a Plex app anymore on that device.
- ACR is embedded so deeply into the player platform, that any regular app running on it won’t be able to influence it anyway
The last thing I heard is that ACR is even performed on signals coming in through the HDMI ports. So using a HTPC as media player won’t prevent your TV from snooping out what you are looking at.
The only cure is to use either professional-grade video monitors instead of consumer TVs, or to never connect your TV to the network.
