Being a PlexPASS member now and this section is for new features, I want to bring another great feature into the discussion here again:
PLEX as DLNA Control Point
I had already started a thread on this a while ago here, but it got quiet in the meantime.
Here’s what I have in mind:
And even Elan seemed to have bought into that idea:
So, what do you think about that? Wouldn't this make our PLEX Setup much more flexible as more and more people do have an iPad, Nexus7 or (rooted;-) Kindle Fire (HD)?
That would dramatically enhance the flexibility in directing Plex content to all the (DNLA)Devices within the house just from any portable device (tablet or Smartphone or even iPod Touch).
This could be music over the AVR with DLNA without the need to turn on any TV/Monitor. or several other scenarios and…
Therre is no need for the tablet/Smartphone to have an HDMI out anymore;-)
+1. Recently began using my PS3 as a plex client (also youtube, with the nifty android device control), and a plex client that could act as a DLNA control point, but still give me the great Plex interface to control my PS3 would be awesome
I would assume that wouldn't be possible... But maybe we'd be able to browse our content on our phone or tablet and than push it to the xbox with its new play-to feature. Then we wouldn't have to use that ugly system media player on the xbox anymore. :)
I consider it a basic and essential feature as I have little interest in listening to my music collection on my tablet, but rather want to hear it on my
Audio system. I have Plex MS installed on my NAS, but do not use the Plex client on my Android tablet because it does not have the "Play To" feature. I use
MediaHouse Pro as the client; it will direct Plex MS to play to my DLNA AV receiver.
My system:
Server: Plex MS 9.7.3.339 on ReadyNAS Pro 2
Renderer: Integra AV Receiver DLNA 1.5 cert.
MediaHouse Pro on Android 4.2.1 on Samsung Nexus 10 tablet
I just change my BD player with an Oppo BDP-105 which is a DLNA controller.
The Oppo can browse a DLNA server, but this is done pretty badly…
It only display the file name and nothing else. And it’s very slow with a large library.
So I use a DLNA controller on my iPhone called “Kinsky” which is far better to browse my Plex library and Kinsky is able to play the choosen video on the Oppo directly.
This is great, but the Plex app on iPhone is far far better than Kinsky and I would be pleased to learn that a future version of the Plex app will be able to control a DLNA renderer like my Oppo player.
I also think this would be great, especially if it were possible to synchronize playback across multiple devices. I would love to be able to use Plex to push the same music to every room during a party or to be able to have other televisions in the house playing the same movie I’ve got going on the home theater.
i think with a dlna/airplay controller support on mobile devices (like android or ios), plex is much more flexible and usefull to integrate in an existing infrastructure. e.g. all new receivers or hifi systems have the renderer functionality included. its like dlna without the disadvantages of dlna (crappy interface)
Really nifty and potentially a killer feature on the long run.
Like someone else said, When( ) PMS are able to stream live tv and through the smartphone client you select where the PMS stream should stream to or using it to stream music in a party to multiple ambients, that would be awesome.
