Plex Audio Differences

I recently started having picture tinting issues with my Plex on Roku and decided to try AppleTV and Nvidia Shield Pro devices out. The Roku did a good job with the Atmos audio and converted DTS into a nice surround 5.1 so that I did not miss the DTS support on the Sonos Arc. I did some testing using Plex, Infuse and Kodi/Plex and came up with some odd results. I was trying to get feedback as to how others have solved the audio limitations of PLex with Sonos Arc. See included images. I am running Plex Server on a Synology DS1520+. The streaming devices are connected to a Samsung Q90T TV using eARC and a high-end 8K HDMI cable to the Sonos Arc.

FYI:

Those are the settings I have inside the Shield. I cannot hear almost anything from the rear speakers using that config and as you can see in the images, the Sonos sees it as “Stereo PCM”. I don’t hear a big difference in the audio between the actual TrueHD using the Shield Pro and the Plex/Infuse version of Atmos on the AppleTV so I am leaning toward keeping that since the DTS experience is more robust.

In the Plex app on the Shield, do you have Passthrough = HDMI?

Edit: Also, check for any Nvidia SW updates and Plex SW updates.

My Shield Pro 2015 is running 8.2.2(32.6.509.0).

Disabling dts & dts-HD audio did not always work. On earlier Nvidia SW releases it would cause other audio formats to transcode. I don’t know exactly when it started working. I noticed it with the last update.

All software is 100% up to date. Settings shown (including Kodi with Plex add-in) below…

Strange that it works for some TVs/receivers/soundbars and not others.

I have Stereo Upmix turned off. It made no difference WRT dts when I enabled it.

My Shield does not have the Dolby Audio Processing. From what I found online, that forces EAC3 to AC3, so should not have an effect on how dts is handled. I did not see any info if it interfered with TrueHD/Atmos processing (but it might interfere with EAC3/Atmos used by Netflix, Amazon, etc).

Otherwise my Shield settings are the same as yours.

Was hoping things were going to work for everyone with the ARC and other equipment that does not handle dts audio.

It will probably take someone from Plex, and maybe Nvidia, to find a way for the Shield to send dts as multi-channel PCM and passthrough TrueHD/Atmos to Samsung TVs.

Hope I didn’t waste too much of your time.

Not at all. Was looking for community input and that’s what you gave me. Perhaps we’ll get some improvement on the AppleTV side when the new model is paired with the next major TVOS version.
