Nvidia Shield, HDMI Passthrough, Dolby Atmos, DTS and Sonos ARC

Hi fellow Plex-users,

I’ve an issue, I just bought a Sonos Arc, so that I could get some Dolby Atmos. I used an ATV 4K at the time of purchase and quickly realized that it would never work, as the ATV doesn’t support passthrough. So no Atmos. I ran out and got a Nvidia Shield Pro 2019 instead, and it work great. Until I had to put on a ripped blu-ray with DTS. The Sonos Arc doesn’t support DTS. The only way I’ve been able to get Dolby Atmos and TrueHD to come out of my Sonos Arc is with HDMI passthrough in the Plex app, but with this setting enabled, DTS is a no go, and no sound comes out of the Sonos. If i turn passthrough off, sound from DTS content, but no TrueHD or Dolby Atmos. So my question is, can I solve this? And get DTS as multichannel PCM and still keep Dolby Atmos and TrueHD?

  1. Check for any Nvidia Shield s/w updates (Shield settings).
  2. Check for any Plex updates (Google Play Store app).
  3. In Shield settings, disable dts & dts-HD MA.
  • Settings → Device Preferences → Display & Sound → Advanced sound settings → Available formats.
  • Change from Auto (default) to Manual.
  • Deselect dts & dts-HD formats.

I’ve a 2015 Shield Pro connected to a Denon receiver. When I perform the above and play a movie with dts or dts-HD audio, the Denon shows it is receiving PCM 5.1 audio (“Multi Ch In”). When I play a movie with TrueHD 7.1 + Atmos audio, the Denon displays “Atmos.”

You’re a lifesaver! Works perfectly, I deselected DTS on the shield and I also had to reboot it. Might have worked to force close apps as well. Thanks for the quick reply! Cheers!

I’ve been having the same issue of no Audio from DTS Files with my Beosound Stage and have been searching for a permanent solution. One where I don’t have to go into the settings every time I’m encountering a file with DTS audio and again after I’m done watching.

As Murzoo said in his first post, if switch passthrough to optical and disable DTS in the Plex settings, I get sound on movies with a DTS soundtrack but lose Dolby Atmos. Unless I switch back manually after I’m done with the DTS movie.
The upside of doing it this way is, that PMS will transcode DTS to Dolby Digital, so I can still enjoy surround sound.

I thought FordGuy61’s post was the solution I hoped for, without manual switching. Unfortunately it is not exactly what I was looking for either.
If I disable DTS in the Shield audio settings, I can indeed keep the Plex audio setting on passthrough, so Dolby Atmos will work AND I get audio on DTS files. Unfortunately in this case, the audio I am getting from DTS files is PCM stereo, not surround sound.
(If that’s what I wanted, temporarily disabling passthrough on my LG C9 OLED TV would be quicker.)

Seems like Plex should really be letting us choose the audio codecs within the Shield Plex app itself, without having to switch to Optical and losing Atmos or disabling passthrough altogether.
(The Plex app on my LG C9 does have that option, but it has other issues. Like not being able to play back some 4K HDR files and not supporting TrueHD 7.1/lossless Dolby Atmos)

Any other ideas? Maybe I am missing something?

Is the Shield connected to the LG or to the soundbar?

Wow, thanks for the quick reply!

The Shield is connect to the LG and via eARC to the soundbar.

As far as I can tell everything is set up correctly. I’ve been checking with the Plex Dash app and the B&O app if or what is happening in terms of transcoding and what is getting through to the soundbar.

Does the LG or the soundbar show that the connection is eARC and not ARC? My LG B7 & audio gear does not support eARC. I’m just wondering if the LG confirms an eARC connection vs falling back to ARC.

Can you connect the Shield to the HDMI input on the soundbar.

See what happens with the Shield audio set to Auto and also with dts/dts-HD disabled (and Plex app HDMI = passthrough). If the Plex server transcodes the audio, to what format?

First, eARC is enabled within the settings on the C9 and if I’m playing an Atmos file in Plex on Shield I can see in Plex Dash that it’s not transcoding and the B&O App is showing the current codec as Dolby Atmos. Even TrueHD 7.1, depending on the file. So it’s definitely working. But apparently there is no indication for it in the TV or soundbar settings.
All other codecs work fine as well. Except for DTS of course, which isn’t supported by the Beosound Stage. If I keep all settings on passthrough (LG, Plex on Shield) I simply don’t get any audio with DTS files.

Since both the TV and Soundbar are wall mounted, simply switching the cables is not actually that easy…
I also really don’t think it’s an issue with cabling/eARC, see my first paragraph.

With Shield audio set to Auto and everything else set to passthrough, I don’t get any audio with DTS files. PMS is showing DTS 5.1 Direct Play.
When I disable DTS in the Shield audio settings I’m getting audio. According to Plex Dash it is DTS 5.1 Direct Play again and the Soundbar is only receiving PCM according to the B&O App. Disabling passthrough either on the C9 or in the Plex app yields the same results.
Shield audio settings in Auto and switching Passthrough to Optical and deselecting DTS in the Plex App on Shield will results in transcoding and getting Dolby Digital to the Soundbar.
