PLEX audio dropouts and sync issues with seamless branching on 4K TrueHD/Atmos movies

Yes I know how the segments work, and yes you would think… for every segment, it should have a 50/50 chance of happening at that point or not… but as I said for M3gan there were at least 15 blips in the extended cut, but (as far as I can tell) zero blips in the theatrical. So whatever is going on, it seems to affect all or none on a disc, mostly… not sure what’s different about your Halloween Kills though which seems to affect both.

How slow we talkin’ here

Anything us folks with a shield pro can assist with? Happy to help being able to watch films without audio dropouts.

Is this still being worked on? Can us paying users who have a shield pro assist in any way?

Like I mentioned 2 months ago, the only way to play branched 4k truehd video/audio without any issues is to use Kodi and PM4K addon. This won’t be fixed in native app for years and there is nothing you can do to help.

At least you are lucky that there are only a handful of 4k movies muxed this way.

That is why I keep on replying. Us paying plex pass customers are used to waiting almost a decade for functionality to magically appear. Us paying plex pass used know plex took a swing at this months ago then went radio silent. That is why I keep on replying.

Any updates on a fix for this issue?

I was watching Leon and had sync issues consistently throughout the whole viewing.

Just bumping again. Seeing if any magic has been able to be made with nvidia.

I know this is a Plex forum, but can I ask, does this branching issue issue happen with Emby or Jellyfin? I have not tried either and am solely a Plex user for now (despite constant issues using it on my Nvidia Shield Pro v9.1.1 - not just with this seamless branching).

Yes it happens in emby as well as they too use exoplayer.

Get ready for more reports, people have been getting the recent popular movie nosferatu 4k directors cut shipped to them. Its a seamless branch title and plex/exo player/shield has issues.

Had to use pm4k addon for kodi.

So far I’ve only noticed this on

  1. The Grudge Blu-ray
  2. Aliens 4K

out of the titles I own, but would love to get Nosferatu soon. Of course the best work around in my case is to play the disc in my Panasonic player, but that kind of defeats the purpose of Plex.

Can confirm, Nosferatu Extended has this issue.

Yes can confirm as well, good place to test is the cut to the boat at 1:12:55 - I thought it was my shield so took it appart, repasted and factory reset only to find out its a software issue…
I have noticed that it has been happening a real lot with many modern 4k disc rips in other places too so probably a different issue, a full restart of the system usually fixed them but looks like Nosferatu is “cursed”!

I do wonder if this would be an issue if my av reciever could handle Atmos, as currently it does not so falls back to the TrueHD base. If it could handle the fulll Atmost track would there still be branching issues?

Yes. Kodi is the only player that plays branched 4k movies so I suggest you install PM4K. No issues there. I also use Shield and prefer PM4K for a lot of reasons, not just because of branched file playback support, but for a lot of other features that native app will never get.

Nosferatu Extended… has bug. Confirmed. Will not play audio correctly in Plex.

I’d be curious as well since Jellyfin has historically had MUCH better codec support

Would you be willing to reach out to @sixones
And see how the progress for this fix is coming along

It is a big Achilles heel for Plex that the platform cannot direct play many currently released titles correctly (also preventing concatenation of files in MakeMKV, as a solution for two part movies on two discs, because the concatenation point gets the bug too if Atmos).

Please help!

Just bumping again, seeing if there are any opportunities to perhaps test a new fix with the UI changes coming to the shield and if there has been any headway with nvidia.

Since I was enticed into watching M3GAN after enjoying the trailer for 2.0, I bought the UHD and ripped the extended and ran into this bug for the first time. It seemed like there was an audio blip and then out-of-sync audio every 10 minutes or so (which would make sense given the number of segments that make up this movie when looking at it in MakeMKV). I’m currently re-ripping the theatrical cut to see if it works without issue like others are reporting here, but I suppose there hasn’t been any progress on fixing this otherwise?
