Good afternoon,
I have an ongoing issue with plex that has been upsetting. not sure if this is known. my movies or tv shows always start in 2.1 audio, and i have to change them when i start them to 5.1 but when i do that, it doesnt show that its also turned on my subtitles. i have to back out of the movie, then start it again, go to settings, and turn off subtitles. becuase if i dont back out, it doesnt show that any subtitles are on. its very strange.
anyone else come across this issue at all? or know of it?
Version 1.7.1.3856, linux version. which is the latest up to date PMS. and its really for all formats. i have a mix of mkv, and mp4, and i think some avi.
once i set it though, it will stay that way. i dont have to do it every time i open a movie i have made this change in. its only the first time. its just annoying is all. i can take a video of it tonight and post it up if you would like to see the process.

That would be your server running on Linux, right? I was asking about your client, where you playback your content. Reason being that some clients like Roku will let you default to 5.1 automatically. Also, there are specific issues regarding MKVs so it would be ideal to confirm that MP4s are not exempt from these issues to better diagnose the problem.
its happening on my ps4 client, and its all file types from what i can tell. currently i can tell you its on MP4 vidoes. becuase that is what i have converted recently, and have had to change when i go to watch them. i have not yet tried checked if this is happening on other clients. however i am unsure exactly the client version on my ps4.
Unfortunately, I don’t own a PS4 but I can tell you that not all Plex
client have the same settings and issues in regards to your problem. Try
changing your settings to “always transcode”, not ideal for CPU usage at
your Linux computer but might fix the problem.
i would rather not transcode if i am at home. the whole point is to use the original. no point in overworking my server if i dont need to. besides that would be a bandaid for the issue. i think the issue needs to be addressed vs changing settings on my end to work around the issue. but transcode shouldnt effect that 5.1 surround sound turns on subtitles, but doesnt show that they are on. so you have to backout of the movie and re-open the movie to see that subtitles are on. so you can turn them off. thats the real issue.

2.1 audio? That’s not a common format. Did you mean 2 channel stereo?
You cannot select a subtitle before it plays. Subtitles will default to off unless you’ve enabled the automatic selection feature in PMS. Settings \ Server \ Languages \ Automatically select audio and subtitle tracks. That setting can also affect audio. PMS can automatically select a different audio track but only depending on the language. There isn’t a way to prefer 5.1 over stereo or vice versa. PMS will select the first audio track or if the above setting is enabled, the first audio track in the selected language.

correct, 2 channel stereo, 2.1 would be with sub. but eitherway, yes, i have set up the settings on pms to prefer english audio, and english subtitles when any language other than english is spoken. When a movie starts, it is originally set to 2 channel stereo. when i change to 5.1 it does not show that any subtitles are selected. but the movie plays with subtitles on. even when i check to see if subtitles are on, they dont show that any are selected. its only when i close out of the movie, and open it back up. then it shows 5.1 audio with subtitles selected. and i have to select no subtitles. and can then play the movie again. but i have to go through this process each time i want to select 5.1 surround sound. once a movie has been setup like that, it holds those settings. so its only a one time action. but its very annoying. and thought maybe a fix was in place for this. or maybe it was a known issue. if not, then maybe it can be looked at by someone.

The setting will auto select the English subtitle if the audio track is labeled with a language other than English. We do not have a way to detect that a specific portion of the movie is using a different spoken language and cannot show subtitles only for this portion. This is known as forced subtitles. The only way to achieve this is to use a special subtitle file called a “forced” subtitle. This is like a regular subtitle file, but it only has the words for foreign spoken languages. So the subtitle is being used the entire time, there’s just nothing to show until the foreign parts come up.
So this sounds like the 2-channel track is labeled English, so the subtitles are not auto-selected. Your 5.1 track is probably not labeled English, so it will auto-select the subtitles to show. If the subtitle selector isn’t showing the correct info, that part may be a bug. The selecting is subtitles sounds to me like it is working properly, maybe just not what you were expecting. If you do not want subtitles to automatically be chosen, please turn that setting off.
