Plex backend outages are becoming too frequent

It’s ridiculous at this point that this should affect already-signed-in clients. And it’s also ridiculous that I should have to use another media server as a backup for when Plex (more and more frequently) stumbles in this regard. Do better.

Yes, how a backend API on the internet is not allowing my local client to list local content is ridiculous. Do a lot better Plex.

I’ve been a fairly steadfast proponent of Plex for personal media serving. But if they can’t get this right, what’s the point? I’m having to resort to other options more frequently now, for various reasons. Some aren’t directly within Plex’s control (ISP outages), but they provide no solution for it.

But this is entirely under their control. I shouldn’t have to resort to watching content via another media server because Plex can’t be bothered with providing a local authentication solution. “Online or nothing” is not acceptable.

How can Plex hope to compete with an inferior open source media server when they can’t be a freaking media server?

I know how their server discovery works. Accessing the “resources” endpoint currently returns a 503. That the clients don’t fall back to previously known servers is, in my estimation, stupid.

My God. On the one hand, you show how much you care about personal media servers by upgrading the transcoder base (FFMPEG) and the drivers. But then you hose everyone by tying your service to your online services.

Please, please, do better.

If I can’t open the Plex app on my Apple TV 4K and watch content, when I want, there’s a problem.

Glad it isn’t just me. Frustrating. Do wish we had a local login option.

I’m attempting remote access and can’t run online. Picks up and runs the tuners, though. Odd.

Took forever to be able to log in here from an Android.

Neat.

Looks like it might be running again. At least I got in.

Can’t even access my server on my literal server machine, I can understand things being iffy if you go via an app or app.plex.tv, but not 127.0.0.1

Theres no built in fallbacks, c’mon?

No, that’s by design, currently. The apps need to be able to discover your server(s) by online means. They’re supposed to cache those logins for a period of time (24 hours?), but even that seems not to be the case now (I’d last used my Apple TV client less than 24 hours ago).

It seems very apparent Plex has a problem here.

I wonder if anyone like myself who has Tailscale running has any issues because Tailscale seems to be okay, but then again, I had Allow Fallback to Insecure Connections set to ALWAYS for this set reason :joy:

I use Tailscale as well for remote access. No, this had nothing to do with that. There was an outage with their authentication servers (per the status page above).

They’ve “implemented a fix and are monitoring the results.” Good on 'em.

Plex’s “person media server” is just too brittle right now.

it’s deeply annoying that the old local login option has been removed. even with whitelisting the server, that is (was?) dependent on browser cache, which feels like a bad solution. the fact that i cannot locally connect to my own local server on my own local network is obscene.

I don’t think there’ll be any response from Plex here. They identified a problem and corrected it. But they won’t acknowledge the fundamental problem that local media server functionality is inextricably tied to the health of their servers.

Again, do better.

And having issues again… https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/s/XBYEINSk9E

Indeed, I just noticed that myself. One can only hope they’ve not become the target DDoS attacks, or some other malicious activity.
