I’m running plex on a machine which has 2 vmware virtual nics which do not access the network, problem is plex is picking one of the then the sever ip address making it inaccessible to the lan how can i change this setting, plex is picking the wrong nic to bind to. please help
Plex being an application will only bind to the IP address presented by the OS.
You need to ensure that the virtual machine with which you’re running plex has the right virtual NIC(s) assigned to it.
Your issue is not plex related.
What happens when multiple NIC's are presented to plex though, how do you make sure plex only binds to a specific NIC?
I am running VMware and i do not have a problem with Plex in this area.
So i would think you have not configured you VMware Network correctly or you are doing something differently then me.
I have many VM's setup and i can connect to the Plex server with them if i want when they are running.
I have my local network 192.1.1 and then two other subnet's setup in VMware network editor.
The two VMware networks are both DHCP where my local network is all static IP address except for a few wireless connections that will get a 192.1.1.101-105 address.
I think Plex like any windows program will bind to the the NIC with the lowest Metric setting. Or if using an older windows OS the NIC with the highest binding order assignment.
i am having the same issue after last update…
I am running a ubuntu VM in esxi 6 and it has 2 nics… one for external internet and one for a vm to vm smb network
plex is binding to the smb network address rather than the one that goes out to my router…
cant seem to reset it…
i had to do a typical plex dance to undick the situation…
ifconfig down the offending virtual nic
logout of plex on the server
log into plex.tv
delete the plex servers credentials
reboot router to flush dns and routing tables
restart the plex server via command line
sign back into plex with the internal data network vnic still downed… ie forcing it to use the only vnic that should/does have internet access…
a couple turn on / off allow network access in the plexserver admin panel
finally get plex to green up external network access
ifconfig up vnic for storage…
bobs your uncle to fix something that plex should undick by now…
how it can choose a vnic that has no internet connectivity is beyond me…
still doing it
overnight the ubuntu plex VM reverted to showing the external connection going from my public internet router address through the VMs internal data network NIC address rather than the VMs internet access network NIC… very strange…
moreover… that network has no internet connectivity and when watching the activity of both nics during a stream to an iphone on the cellular network… it appears that data is comming into the VM from media storage on the correct NIC and that the stream is being broadcast out to the internet on the correct NIC even though the plex server web interface shows otherwise…
this needs to be addressed…
Im assuming that the os the VM is running is windows. I had this issue at work and you can change priority of network card in windows. with out me typing too much try this. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2526067
if its any windows version it should get you close. Just set the nic you want to use to the top of the list. You could also try disabling the other NIC’s, restart plex and then if working properly enable them all and see if that helps.
Christmas has come early ! The feature of allowing the user to select a specific network interface is now available as from Plex Media Server version 1.13.5.5291 which was released to Plex Pass beta yesterday
See Release Note Plex Media Server
