Plex buffering and server

Using plex on my iMac to stream to my Samsung Smart Tv and i find two frustrating things:

  1. the video will stop and give a whirling circle and not play. I am on the same network with both the tv and the computer and enjoy download speeds of up to 600 on my computer. Is there a setting some where?
  2. Some times I get an error message saying sometime like the server isn’t strong enough to convert the movies.
    Any ideas??

You might want to take a look at the “Now Playing” section of the server dashboard to get an idea of what’s causing this. Even if your internet download speed on your iMac is 600 Mbps – that doesn’t mean you get that bandwidth between your iMac and the Samsung TV. This can especially be problematic if there’s some glitch in your network setup that’ll make Plex think you’re streaming to/from a different network using an indirect connection (e.g. check if the stream in the “Now Playing” section is labelled as local, remote or indirect). Similarly, many smart TVs only offer a 100 Mbps LAN port (which is not enough bandwidth for some high-quality / high-bitrate media).

As for the 2nd message… the “Now Playing” info should also show if/what part of your stream require transcoding and indicate if that’s too much for your iMac. Especially older models will easily be brought to their knees if you’re transcoding high-quality / high-resolution media.

Thanks for your information. My iMac is the latest model.

i am a mac user and stream from my server on my imac (new iMac M1) to my Samsung Smart tv (a new tv)and have several chronic problems:

  1. server is not strong enough to play plex provided movies; on my computer the movies play as they should but not when I use plex on my tv; however, my home movies play well on my tv when streamed from my computer.
  2. Can you cast video from your computer directly to the tv without using the plex app on the tv

What settings should I use in preferences to get plex working as it should?
Re: your reply. I can’t see the now playing option as the movie does not load and I just get the ‘server not strong enough’ message.
Thanks,
GH

thanks for you response. I am not familiar with plex and often have buffering problems. In your reply you mention ‘now playing’ and i haven idea where or how to access this. If is say server not strong enough, how is that corrected. I would welcome some idea of what settings to toggle in settings and are the settings the same in the server and in the app. What is the difference between this two app anyway?

Also the buffering only exist when I play my downloaded home videos from my desktop folder via the app I have on my computer and the corresponding one on my Amazon Fire TV Cube.

This is part of the server dashboard you can see in Plex Web.

That depends on what’s causing it. It can be your server is actually not powerful enough or Plex might be confusing some poor bandwidth as “the server not being capable to deliver media fast enough”. So we first need to know more about what’s actually happening.

  • 1st icon is the Plex Media Server app that organizes your media and makes it available to your client apps.
  • 2nd icon is the Plex for Mac/Windows/Linux client. It’s look & feel is based on the web app but it’s more capable than streaming media in a browser.
