Plex buffering constantly

I moved apartments, and the internet in the new apartment is 500mg 5g rather than 200mg. I have no other problems with it.

my Plex library runs from a M2 MacBook Air with the library on a usb drive. Since moving, Plex has been unusable except In one circumstance. I have two tvs in the lounge, each has more than one way of playing Plex, built in apps, a firestick in each, plus one has a PS5. in all of them, playback is unwatchable with stuttering every minute. If I use Plex on the MacBook itself then it plays fine.

When I go into dashboard it shows
buffering
local - 4mps
video 1080i (hevc main 10)
Direct play

the ISP router provides two signals, a 2.5g and a 5g connection and everything is on the 5g one. all devices are in one room and relatively close to each other, within 2 metres.

I really hate when they use marketing terms where they do not belong…

Do you mean 2.4GHz (802.11B, G and N band) and 5GHz (802.11A, and N band)? Those are frequencies for wireless networks. I never recommend using servers on wireless networks. Always wired.

If they are doing something like this then they are not doing something they should called “band-steering”. 5GHz is a lot more bandwidth and less interference but it comes at the expense of being about 1/2 the range of 2.4GHz. It is just the physics of wireless signal. 5GHz is roughly double the frequency of 2.4GHz. There are channels inside that and the rabbit hole can get very deep.

Wireless is also a shared technology meaning all wireless devices within an access point’s coverage share the overall bandwidth and have to take turns communicating (hence, why I do not recommend wireless connections for servers and will always recommend wired). If you have a lot of devices, that cuts down the availability for each one overall.

Thanks. I need to buy an adaptor so I can attach my MacBook Air to Ethernet. Hopefully that will fix it.
