I have hundreds of movies on new Synology server. Plex could see them fine but they weren’t grouped by folder. I added folders to the Plex app and now it can’t see anything on the server. How do I fix this?
How do you mean this?
Could you provide some screenshots how this is looking at your NAS and how you added the media storage location to your Plex libraries?
I’m not sure the screen shots would do any good but here’s how I started this. I have a 2 bay Synology server with 2 6-TB drives. It is linked to my home network.
I added the folders “Movies” and “TV Shows” to the directory on the device and started adding my movies to it from temporary storage devices (I had been using Seagate Cloud but it failed - for the second time).
The movies on the temporary storage devices were set up by type of movie - .e.g. Action, Comedy, Drama, etc. - just as they had been on the Seagate device. My TV has the PLEX app on it and I connected it all without problems.
It was seeing all the movies I had added just fine - except they weren’t being listed by directory. I looked at the PLEX support listings again and it said I needed to apply the directories I wanted the movies to show up in on the app itself so I added them.
From that time forward I have only been able to see 3 random movies I have saved. Not sure how to make the PLEX app see the movies now and the directories I have them in.
It all worked just fine with the Seagate. Should I just deleted the PLEX app on my computer and on the TV and just start all over?
Plex is not using a categorization by folder.
Rather it uses the folder structure to get clues about what the media are and then goes out and fetches metadata from external sources. Afterwards you can then use the genre to filter your library and do a lot of other things with it, which weren’t possible with a folder hierarchy.

Considering that your Synology model is at the lower end of the model spectrum, you cannot really expect it to be able to play anything that requires transcoding. You should keep that in mind when preparing content.
