Plex client on iPadOS crashing at least 5-7 times a week

Summary of outcome of almost 2 years of Plex crashing multiple times a week, often a day:

Dear Plex, you win, I give up on any hope of running Plex on my iPad without crashing multiple times a week. Thank you for providing absolutely no help or guidance, not once since I raise this topic (one that so many others have raised).

If I worked at Plex, and these forums were the designated support channel, and had a customer who had clearly outlined the issue, provided every single bit of information required and bothered to escalate multiple times here and via email…I’d be embarrassed and looking to do anything I could to help. Or at the bare minimum provide some suggestions, and if unable to fix, admit it just like a grown up person would.

To anyone else with crashing on iOS (specifically iPad for me, I don’t use Plex on iPhone) the only solution that I can recommend after dealing with this issue for a number of years.

Pay for Infuse, it works, downloads aren’t slow, it doesn’t crash.

Server Version#: 1.31.2.6739
Player Version#: 8.15
iPadOS Version#: 16.3.1
iPad Hardware#: 2021 iPad Pro M1

My Plex Player app on iPad has been crashing (mainly on start-up, but can be anytime) fairly constantly for the last few weeks/months. Suspect this is something to do with auto download for series, but have no real way to tell what is triggering it.

I’d rather not post player and server logs publicly, however happy to share via DM or other method.

9:55 is the latest crash in the logs that I can provide.

UPDATE 30/5 - Still experiencing constant crashes (Player 8.19.1 & Server 1.32.2.7100 currently, however each version has had issues since my initial post), have submitted a few more rounds of debug files. I’ve also tried to totally un-install and re-install the client on my iPad twice. I see from quite a few other posts that I’m not alone with this experience, so hoping that we can work together to figure out what is going wrong and move to a fix. I suspect it is either Downloads or something to do with Stage Manager interoperability issues. I’ll share my latest debug files with @BigWheel just to keep the information flowing.

UPDATE 9/6 - I’m done, put simply Plex on iPad doesn’t work, and you can’t trust it. No one at Plex seems to care about basic app stability on what I would hope is a core platform. I beg of the Plex team, please stop doing anything else, get your iOS and Mac products sorted, perhaps read these forums where so many basic bug reports around stability go without any form of resolution or apparent care.

@Update 29/8 - Since posting in March (and experiencing this issue before that time), not one suggestion or fix has been provided back from the Plex team. I’m going to try to escalate this to some of the executive team via email to see if we can get some basic attention to this long standing and widespread issue.

@Update 7/1 - After escalation to senior management and more data shared several times, still no progress at all, not one recommendation nor indication anything is happening with this long standing (for many people) issue. This is pathetic.

@Update 14/3 - Still no feed-back at all from Plex, still crashing multiple times a week, sometimes a day. Hoping for a fix at some point.

@Update 24/7 - It’s now well over 16 months since I started having this issue, and now well over 12 months since I created this thread, without any meaningful progress at all. Sigh.

That was a ridiculously quick response @BigWheel, logs DM’d (or at least what I hope are the right logs). Happy to provide anything else required.

Thank you for the help!

I don’t see anything obvious to me in your logs. I will need to poke other folks to take a look

I had a bit of a look myself, and beyond a few external library connectivity issues couldn’t see anything myself. Obviously not a clue what I’m looking for, but nothing was obvious around “the world is ending, time to auto quit”.

Happy to do some additional digging if required. Also of note is that stage manager is turned on (no external monitor), not sure if that might be something else to consider.

I agree. I reckoned it had to do with my now obsolete iPad mini 4, but glad to see others are affected.

Usually happens when there’s no WiFi and ive got tonnes of downloads

I’m almost always connected to local WIFI when it happens, and only have a few downloads that it needs to check.

An initial look by devs think the crashes may be related to downloads but still looking

Thanks @BigWheel just had three crashes in a row, as in Plex running and then un-commanded return to Home Screen.

This was on start-up each time, wifi connected on local LAN, I don’t think any downloads needed to be queued, so if something to do with downloads it is the media checking bit perhaps.

I’ll send Plex Client (I’ve enabled verbose yesterday), Server and O/S logs now via DM.

Once again appreciate the team looking into this, I’m happy to try other scenarios to help with debug.

Still having this issue, even after deleting the Plex app and setting up only a few downloads. Downloads on my iPad is the only reason I have a Plex Pass, given sync never worked, and now downloads has so many issues, including app crashing, hope someone can get to the bottom of what the issue is.

I’ve also send some updated debug files to @BigWheel just in case that is helpful.

Thanks @ozsmac I will add them to the bug report.

I’ve just submitted several fresh debug files on this issue and updated the original post with further information.

Other folks seem to be having similar issues of general instability of the iOS client across iPad and iPhone:

Thanks for pointing me to those other topics

I am also experiencing the same issue both on iPad AND iPhone. I’m happy to share log files on DM if that’s helpful.

If you need any additional testing please do let me know. I’m going to do some testing over the next few days to see if that improves the stability of the app:

A: With stage manager turned off

then

B: Disable any automatic downloads

I’ll update this thread with any findings.

@ja4307 I’m always happy to take more logs to add to report. You are welcome to message me the logs by clicking on my username/avatar

Well it isn’t Stage Manager that is causing the crashes, just had four crashes in 2 minutes with stage manager turned off, and a few more earlier.

Next step is to delete the app again (now for the third time) and test without using any downloads.

I’ll submit some further log files, I’ve had a look through them already and can’t see any smoking gun error messages, nothing to indicate anything odd when the crash happens.

Happening to me all of a sudden. I have about 20-30 items downloaded, but crashes occur just after startup, before anything is selected for playback. Quite worrying.

So three days ago I started to re-add downloads, and sure enough Plex is crashing multiple times a day.

This has been a problem for too long and reported too frequently by so many people.

As I understand it, these forums are the only support path, so my question is what is the next step here?

Downloads is nothing more than a late Alpha or Beta release, you forced us away from the sync feature, and now it appears that anyone who wants to use this feature is out of luck.

(sorry to mention this, however Infuse downloads without issues and doesn’t crash several times a day, not bad for a very small indie developer)
