Plex on iPad constantly crashes

Server Version#: 1.32.1.6999
Player Version#: 8.19.1

Plex on my iPad Pro (12”, M1 iPad) constantly crashes. The crashes can be completely random - sometimes when in the middle of watching something, sometimes when I first open the App, during downloads, etc. I’ve used the App on two different iPads (also on a 10.5” iPad Pro) and the same random crashes occur. I don’t believe this to be a server issue, as I also have a backup Plex Server on my Nvidia Shield and the same crashes occur.

On certain crashes, even when I reopen and try to resume the content I am watching, the App will re-crash. The only way to stop this is if I restart the iPad.

Happy to send logs via a DM.

Hi @DarrDon

If you could DM me logs that would be great. The process for obtaining logs is described here.

Is this something that has only started occurring since the update to 8.19.1 (which went live on Monday May 22nd) or were you also experiencing this on previous versions?

Thanks

Sadly this is common for many users including myself, I’ve had a thread open about this for quite a while, submitting numerous debug/logs however no outcome at this point.

At least three times a week I open Plex or playback content and it crashes.

Plex is now the worst bit of software on my iPad, and I’ve started to pay for Infuse again as a result that I find to be totally unacceptable.

Perhaps other folks success is different.

I’ve been living with it for years now, hoping each update will resolve the issues but nope. I’ve had to just live around the crashes, and not play content in PiP, Stage Manager, etc. as this tends to lead to crashes. Follow particular steps to download content, otherwise the app would crash again. I’ve turned off transcoding, thinking it might be a source of issue but nope. I’ve reached my limit with the App, hence this thread.

No this isn’t specific to the 8.19.1 release - it’s been happening years now to be honest. But just decided to raise it now as it’s driving me insane how randomly it crashes

Do you have a strong Wifi signal and use 5GHz Band, Try using a different GHz channel, Say 100

The crashes even occur when I am offline and watching content from my “Downloads” so I don’t believe it to be WiFi related.

yep same situation for me, even with flight mode enabled and watching downloaded content the Plex app often crashes on my iPad.

So state of WIFI doesn’t seem to have any relevance, nor cellular.

Is it possible to get this added to the backlog to fix? Had to restart my iPad, turn off my WiFi (even though I was not connected to any network) just to get into my “Downloads” to watch something today. Otherwise it kept crashing. It’s very frustrating.

Sadly same situation for me, now since November/December last year. I’m now using Infuse on iPad and also using my Mac more and more to work around.

This really isn’t great.

Think I’m going to move to infuse too. Plex is pretty much open and crash about 8 times in a row and then finally it won’t crash for a few minutes. I can’t believe I paid for this dumpster fire of a piece of software

What I’m most surprised about is the total lack of any meaningful response to so many people diligently providing log files and trying to work with the Plex team via the only support method available.

I’m trying to not let it annoy me, but if this is the total lack of regard this company has for it’s paid users, it might be time to find another solution.

Example thread - https://forums.plex.tv/t/plex-client-on-ipados-crashing-at-least-5-7-times-a-week.

I’ve resorted to just using the Web App, and downloading through that also. No crashes this way. Got so sick of crash after crash. I refuse to pay for Infuse, as I shouldn’t have to pay for another app after paying for a subscription for Plex.
