Plex client on iPadOS crashing at least 5-7 times a week

Another month goes by without any further contact or any attempt to help, iPad app still crashing multiple times per day.

Just submitted another crash report in iOS, used the words “Crash information SM_2024_01_24_16:23” in the description just in case it is of some use to Plex (assuming someone gets these).

Another set of crashes again today, I’m starting to wonder if anyone at Plex actually uses the app anymore.

All I’m asking is that the iPadOS app doesn’t crash frequently, as many many people continue to report yet no action is taken.

So after submitting those logs you haven’t had a reply?

If that was a question I think you answered it yourself.
On the plus side Plex have been actively trying to hire someone with a clue about Apple Products.
The ad has now gone offline so hopefully by next year you may get a resolution.

Yeah sadly the only communications from the Plex team are in this thread, no emails or other forms of communication.

I love Plex dearly…just wish I could use it on my main media consumption devices, my iPad.

More crashes today, crash reported from my email address with description SM_01_02_2024_09_18.

Yesterday I erased my iPad to factory defaults, didn’t restore anything from backup, and only installed the Plex app.

It crashed within a few minutes of use, and again today.

Sent through log files again with more description to @BigWheel & @McWanke in the hope we can find a cause and solution. Also just to confirm this is also happening on my other 11" iPad Pro.

still happening.

still not even a single suggestion or attempt to fix by Plex.

Still an issue, still not a single suggestion or attempt to fix from the Plex team.

Crashed twice in a row today, how exciting.

Hi there ozmac, it’s not an excuse but maybe the start of an explanation: I traveled a bit recently and stayed in places with large screen TVs and projectors. Naturally, I wanted to make use of them and downloaded the Plex App for different LG televisions and also a Samsung projector. None of them worked. What surprised me was that Plex even offered apps for all these different platforms. It seems to me, that they are simply overstretched and struggling to keep up.

Guess what, Plex still crashing. Dear Plex team, any chance of getting someone to look at this please.

The plex app on my iphone crashes constantly. Nearly every time I use it. I stream music from my plex server located on my PC or will play the music that I downloaded to the phone. Both instances produce crashing. Sometimes it will crash, I’ll restart the app and it will crash again before the plex logo is done animating. It feels like a crappy underdeveloped app, but it’s been around for a very long time and should not function this way. I’m a plex pass user, so even more frustrating to pay for the service only to have the app be mostly unusable.

If anyone has an alternative for downloading music to an iphone, that would be great. Time to move on from this paid app as there’s obviously no action being taken on this issue.

Sadly this is still happening for me on iOS and iPadOS with the Plex client.

@whatyouare_hotmail_com have you tried the Plex Amp application? This might give you a better option for Music?

@ozsmac I just opened a thread about this myself after leaving a less than favorable review. Mine crashes if anything at is all is downloaded. It crashes on start if I have Wifi or Cell enabled. There are times its crashed like 10 times in a row…shocked there is even space left with the crash reports that Ive uploaded.

@bborthwell I do have a fix, sadly it involves moving to using Infuse on iOS, tvOS and MacOS. Also delivers the benefit of Airplay working, better window framing on MacOS, Picture in Picture support on MacOS and licensed dolby that works.

I’d rather not have to pay for Infuse just to get a stable non crashing media player on iOS, but it does come with a few more benefits.

I actually escalated this issue directly to some senior members of the Plex organisation (LinkedIn is a great tool), the result was the engineering manager reached out in this thread, however nothing actually happened. I’ve never seen a company be so belligerent in addressing a wide spread issue that impacts so many people across iOS and iPadOS, these threads are full of app crash issues, without any resolution. If a small dev house like Infuse can deliver an app that just doesn’t crash (not even once) with the feature range they have, makes me wonder if Plex is just stretched too thinly for the breadth of platforms, or just doesn’t give a SH*T at all about it’s users experiences over many years. Sorry about the rant.

Dear Plex, you win, I give up on any hope of running Plex on my iPad without crashing multiple times a week. Thank you for providing absolutely no help or guidance, not once since I raise this topic (one that so many others have raised).

If I worked at Plex, and these forums were the designated support channel, and had a customer who had clearly outlined the issue, provided every single bit of information required and bothered to escalate multiple times here and via email…I’d be embarrassed and looking to do anything I could to help. Or at the bare minimum provide some suggestions, and if unable to fix, admit it just like a grown up person would.

To anyone else with crashing on iOS (specifically iPad for me, I don’t use Plex on iPhone) the only solution that I can recommend after dealing with this issue for a number of years.

Pay for Infuse, it works, downloads aren’t slow, it doesn’t crash.
