I use plex on my android phone to control plex on my desktop. The phone, desktop, and server are all on the same overall internal network, though all three are on different subnets because I have them separated across VLANs.
Traffic between the three VLANs are NOT blocked.
Intermittently Plex companion will disconnect from the player and give me the option to continue watching on the mobile device. Of course that’s not what I want, so I select ‘no’ which stops the currently playing media on my desktop. From here I connect back to the player from my phone and then I can restart what ever was playing before.
This happens multiple times a day. I let plex play in the background while I work, and the plex companion gives me an easy way to change whats playing without having to switch back to my desktop.
This started recently, about 2 weeks ago.
The android app direct streams from the server without any issues, and the desktop app also streams from the server without issues.
I’ve done speed/packet tests between the phone and the desktop, between the phone and the server, and between the phone and an external server. In all three cases no packets are dropped and I’m consistently getting over 100Mbs.
The phone is connected over WiFi but the actual wifi chip in the phone is kinda crap so it generally taps out at around 200Mbs even though my WiFi AP is capable of WiFi 6.
EDIT: Yesterday the plex windows application stopped working completely. After about 5 minutes of playback the entire app would crash. I uninstalled it and installed Plex Media Player instead. The HTPC application. This is running stable, and I don’t have problems with plex companion while using PMP. Plex companion is also way smoother and there’s no input lag with this setup. With the Plex Windows App any input I provided through plex companion would usually have a couple seconds of delay before the application reacted, for instance skipping to the next title in the playlist.
