Plex Crashes TS-453 when played via HDStation and HDMI

I’ve had no further luck getting this resolved by QNAP support… NAS is hooked directly to TV via HDMI and setup on a new network, and reproduced the issue reliability with many MKV files. One in particular I’ve watched many many times with my previous QNAP-251 unit with firmware about 9 months old… that file is named “General North-America North-vs-South War 2016 IMAX BluRay 720p DTS AC3 x264-ETRG.mkv” (title edited for copyright reasons… although I own the disc) and the filename alludes to the video type/codecs needed (I think).

On the recommendations of QNAP support, as they claim my OS is corrupted (I don’t believe this, as it worked fine before I migrated the physical disks to new HW) I’ve purchased new disks, backed up all my data, and removed my existing disks. I’ve installed a new disk, initiated a reboot to kickoff the QNAP wizard for a fresh/clean OS install and config. Went through the process and installed the Plex Home Theater 1.4.2.002 that is the default on HDstation along with the Plex Media Server 1.12.0.4829 that is installed on OS version. I uploaded the movie files that I had problems with to the NAS and setup Plex settings.

Playing the movie files on this clean, just built system resulted in the same crash. Playing those MKV files and simply fast-forwarding or playing quickly crashes the box reliably, time after time. Sometimes, just browsing the Plex UI causes a crash, but its less reproducible as simply fast-forwarding the video. The logs are attached, although inexplicably, there is nothing in the crash dumps.

I’m at a loss, unless this is literally a hardware issue. The same files play fine on laptops or other devices.

Ideas?

Yep, I’ve seen those and been there… before I swapped out my drives and rebuilt, I’d tried the Father_Mande builds and consistently had the same errors…

That said, the QNAP ppl (Keith, the support manager) insist that the specific versions of the pkgs for PMS and PHT that they incorporate on the QNAP OS (while perhaps not the latest) do in fact work.

That said, i’m curious if anyone has seen specifically this issue as again, the QNAP support manager insists that nobody else has seen/reported this issue… I’m inclined to disagree and in fact, had exactly this issue with Kodi several years ago and at that time, it was ultimately reported to be a QNAP HDstation issue that was later resolved.

I’ll go through the effort of Phillipe’s builds (Father_Mande) on the rebuilt OS i’m running now, but i’d be surprised if it had any effect…

Other ideas?

Dane22:

I just installed PMP2 2.9 from Philippe’s site (I’m sure I did this previously) and this replaces the PHT that is bundled by QNAP as part of HDstation… This still requires (please tell me this is correct or not) the use of the PMS that is part of the QNAP App Center, or is there a different version that I need to install from someplace? If I use the PMS that QNAP bundles I still reliably get a hardware crash on the QNAP NAS by fast-forwarding through a MKV video file…

I can do this on demand, every-time…

Do a manual install from https://plex.tv/downloads of the PMS

The one in the QNAP Repo is sadly always behind
