Plex crashing on Android devices when attempting to cast

I have been trying to cast from my Galaxy S20 and when i choose the device i want to cast to it just keeps playing on the phone then eventually crashes about 30 seconds later. I’ve had this issue for a couple of weeks. I decided to try to cast from my Huawei media pad and the exact same issue. I can cast to the same device from my Ipad with no issues. The 2 android devices are fine to cast other apps however, this is only a problem when casting plex.

I am not having this issue. Please try removing the app from your device and then reinstalling it.

This was the first thing i tried, made no difference.

Confirmed. I can cast from my POS Vankyo tablet, but not from my Galaxy S20.

What Android OS? What device? A dismissal with no details and no research is of no value.

I’m unsure if the problem is the same but I have a similar problem when trying to cast to Chromecast.

I tried with both a Samsung Galaxy S20 and Samsung A70, and both just don’t want to cast to it. It plays no problem on the device itself.

Note that the actual casting works, the issue lies with it actually playing the media.

I also tried removing and installing the apps, restarted my media server but no luck.

What’s odd is that when looking at my dashboard it shows as playing and counts to like 20 seconds and then goes to 0 again. Whilst no playback is actually happening.

Those are exactly the symptoms we’re seeing. What version of Android are on those devices? I don’t think it has anything to do with the media server or chromecast. This seems to have manifested itself after the latest Android update. As I posted above, using a tablet with an earlier version of Android works just fine.

On the S20 the Android OS is G980FXXU6DUB5 / G980FOXM6DUB5 / G980FXXU6DUB5

Pixel 3 , Android 11, March 5, 2021 security update. Chromecasts of all generations. Does that add value?

Yes, that adds tremendous value and quite helpful. So it appears that earlier versions of Android are not exhibiting this problem. Perhaps this is a Chromecast/Boomerang app problem. I know I used to be able to use the S20 but haven’t been able to since the last update. So perhaps some new security behavior or setting is getting in the way.

Sorry, no, a Pixel 3 would be running a current version of Android.

You’re absolutely right. A clear cause seems hard to determine.

Something should be done with either the Plex app or Chromecast to fix this. This isn’t an isolated incident. Granted, there are few here commenting on it. But that’s a small percentage of those effected (affected? I’m never quite sure). Here’s hoping that our concerns are drawing some attention.
