Plex Crashing on Specific 4K Files

Server Version#: 1.42.2.10156
Player Version#: 2025.31.1

On certain 4k titles, all of which are direct disc rips, Plex will crash to the home screen on Apple TV. The crash always occurs at the exact same spot within each movie. I’ve seen this with 12 Monkeys when the opening credits change to the opening shot, Eyes Wide Shut, directly after it cuts from Nicole Kidman’s last line to credits, and Invasion USA when it cuts from the final shot to credits.

The problem doesn’t happen when playing back on iOS, over Plex HTPC on macOS or Windows, or playing the file directly in VLC in both macOS or Windows.

The common denominator in each is a cut either from or into credits, and my gut says that can’t be a coincidence. Any ideas what’s happening here and why this is unique to playback on Apple TV?

Can you provide server logs and a timestamp when you re-created this issue? (Logs should include this period +5 minutes)

Thanks. I’m not comfortable sharing logs in a public space, however this is what I see in both the logs and console when the issue happens:

Failed to stream media, client probably disconnected after 327680 bytes: 104 - Connection reset by peer

Without more information that single line in the logs doesnt mean much. Context is needed. If you would like PM me the logs and I can take a look.

I have encountered a handful of files that would crash not only Plex, but the entire Android TV, which was impressive. It would be cool if the company set up a way for us to provide samples of such explosive files. While the problem can be worked around by getting a different file, it’s still not great for anything to bring the whole system down.

Just re-transcode the file. Plex cannot be expected to handle garbage files.

Plex should be able to generate a usable error message and just not crash the app.

All of that information is normally in the log files. Its just a matter of knowing what to look for.
