Server Version#: Version 1.31.3.6868
Player Version#:8.17(5542) (AppleTV)
PMS running on WS2022. OS and drivers fully updated, recent hardware.
I’ve been dealing with PMS crashing randomly 1-3x a day for the last couple of weeks and looking through log files to try to figure out what’s causing it.
Tonight I verified my suspicions and confirmed that whenever remote users with 4K AppleTV (at least the newest version) play certain files of mine the PlexMediaServer.exe crashes instantly.
All my files are pretty similar - 720/1080p, .mkv in H264, 8bit, EAC3 audio.
When I play the same file on a 2nd gen AppleTV it works just fine. When users play the same file on Plex Web it works just fine.
When they play another random file that have as far as I can tell exactly the same properties in Media Info (resolution, container, video frame rate, h264 level etc) it works. From the logs it seems that Plex tries to transcode the file, although all settings are set to direct play and it does direct play other similar files.
This sounds like a bug with PMS to me, but I can’t figure out what it is about those certain files that makes the server crash.
Attatched is the ending of the PlexMediaServer log file which includes the start of the playback before the crash, as well as the .xml for the file that causes the crash.
