Plex Dash wrong location listed in Now Playing?

How does the iOS Plex Dash determine your location? I have 3 streams going on right now. Two friends remotely and they correctly say “Cleveland Ohio”. I’m streaming locally in my house and it says “Summerville South Carolina” even though it list my local IP.

Almost certainly your public IP is mapping to that location; the Plex cloud has IP-to-geo mapping database and it gets regular updates because IP addresses … move

It depends on which database they use. One shows South Carolina, and another correctly shows the town I’m in. Whatismyip.com vs whatismyipaddress.com, for instance shows different locations.

In the end it comes down to the fact that IP addresses don’t have a physical location. These databases try to extrapolate a geo-location based on who owns the IP or some known “hops” (e.g. your ISPs main gateway).

You can procure an IP address or an IP range and use it on a server that’s located on the other side of the planet. In my old company we used to work with a local instance of a business application; we got the IP for that instance from the application provider – consider the fun we had to explain our customers that this US registered IP address belongs to a ring-fenced setup in Europe
