I’m finally taking the plunge later this year and getting myself a MacBook Air! I’m waiting to see what the new model is going to look like/feature before I decide if I want the M1 or the newer model (if it comes with white bezels as predicted, I’ll be sticking to the M1).
My question is, will I be able to download the Plex player for MAC on my MacBook Air, like I have it on my Windows laptop & Chromebook, and be able to access/stream content from my Windows laptop that has the Plex media server on it, to the MacBook Air? It seems to work great streaming from my Chromebook. I just want to make double sure I can do this.
I realize you can also stream now from a web browser, but I’d rather have the app on my MacBook Air instead.
Thanks!
P.S. I’d rather not create a new topic so I’m just going to ask it here regarding the Chromebook. The Plex app for the Chromebook (from Google Play Store) does NOT have volume control in the app for some reason. It does on the Windows version. Can anyone confirm if there is a volume control on the app for the Mac?
Thanks, can you explain a bit more about what you mean by there is no native app for the M1? On the downloads page, it shows a Mac version for the Plex app for desktops; "10.13 High Sierra or later (64-bit only).
At present there is no app for Mac and Apple Silicon (M1) for example. So a Program is automatically availabe on a new Mac called Rosseta, it will emulate the Plex app suitable for a Intel Mac at almost native speed.
I’m also waiting to purchase a new 27" iMac with Apple Silicon and hoping by then a Universal Plex app for Mac will be available.
So you’re saying not only will I have to download the Plex app for the Mac, but also an additional piece of software in order to use it? That’s jacked up!
But PMP is also only available as a Intel-compatible build. So it won’t be executed natively on new Apple computers.
And no, there is no need to download additional software. Rosetta is already part of the MacOS on these machines.
Since 2006, Apple computers used to have Intel CPUs built in. But now Apple have their own CPU models, named M1 (based on ARM, but massively beefed-up).
ARM is fundamentally different from Intels x86 architecture. So a “translation” is necessary to execute apps which have been compiled for the Intel architecture.
So will the app still work/play my media files without any issues until a native app is released for the M1? I’m asking because originally I was going to order my MacBook Air with 1TB of SSD, but I can get by with 512, as long as I can stream from my media server to the MacBook Air. It saves me $200 too!
Also, until a native app is released, would it be better to just stream on the MacBook Air from a web browser, verses installing the Plex app on the MacBook Air?
Update.
With the change to Intel from Power PC from Freescale formerly IBM ( motorola), Rosetta was already part of the change. Apple now (2022) does not include it in the apps on purchase
