Plex displays wrong colours with Dolby Vision on AppleTV 4k

Thanks for the update ChuckPa.

Do you have to pay for pro version of Infuse in order to play DV files?

Yes you do

Just wanted to confirm that I am seeing the same issue on DV files encoded with profile5. Weird green color shift on Plex Server Version 1.22.3.4392, AppleTV 4K (latest Plex app release) and LG OLED. Files playback normally when using LG webOS Plex App.

Some here - same issue with Plex on Apple TV 4k and LG OLED. The “native” Plex client for the LG TV works without problem.

Would be great to get an update on this and ideally a potential timeframe for a fix?

Thanks, cheers!

Same here. All files tagged DV (DolbyVision) exhibit color problems on Apple TV 4K.

Hi @ChuckPa, would you mind checking with the team to get an update? I know this is a WIP.

Just want to pile on here. I’m having the same issue. Just recently setup a new ATV 4K with the A12 SoC. Trying my DV files results in the green/purple colours. The tv does flip into DV but the video is not displayed correctly. Everything works fine with the Android TV Plex app built into the Sony x900h.

@ChuckPa any updates? This is going to be a deal breaker for this device. I’ll probably have to send it back if the ATV Plex app can’t handle these DV files.

If you’re heavily invested in Apple Ecosystem, consider Infuse in the interim while Plex gets its ATV house in order.

I was using Android TV up until last night. I was looking forward to switch over to the new ATV since I am in the iOS ecosystem and fully embedded in Plex. I don’t want to pay for another app/subscription. At this point I’ll likely wait a week or so to see if there’s feedback from Plex about this problem and if not I’ll be returning the ATV until such time that Plex fixes this issue. It’s a really expensinve unit here in Canada and Plex is my main use-case.

I had no real issues with my Android TV experience, I was trying to minimize data collection by removing the network connectivity from the TV after starting to use the ATV and to get better performance out of the ATV. I definitely did not expect to encounter DV not working properly which eventually lead me to this thread.

Thanks for the Infuse tip @blackzwe. Tried it and Infuse works perfectly, no problem at all to play the DV files that Plex fails at. For now I have (sadly) retired Plex on my brand new aTV and will wait if / when this will be resolved.

@ChuckPa I can imagine that you probably have a lot of such requests, but it would definitely be helpful to get at least a short sign of live (e.g. “yes, we know the issue, are working on it, and should have a solution in XY days / weeks”) would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

Edit: Devs and Ninjas recognized problems and are addressing the matter, thank you PleX.

As requested:

  1. Yes, we know about the issue.
  2. Yes, it is being worked, along with all the other issues to handle which interrupt
  3. No, I don’t know when this enhancement will make it to formal production status.

Please put me down as a user with the same issues as well as an upvote to get this working on Plex… long time member and would like to stay that way.

With the myriad of ATV problems. Some of which honestly have to do with Apple’s closed systems, wondering if now is finally the time to ditch the ATV?

That’s your prerogative. Only you can make choices like that. I bought a Shield TV even though I have a preference for Apple stuff just because it has support for bitstreaming.

Those are Plex problems, not ATV problems. I do like my ATV, it does not spam me with ads and gives me a clean, working and fast interface with a nice remote and updates for ages.
But you need to decide yourself what works for you.
You do you.

I feel you on that one. All my media stuff is with Apple. Now that is a a available on Android TV in Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision :man_shrugging:

Not exactly true. Lack of support for bitstream and limited HDR profile support are not exactly Plex problems. The Infuse team will inform how they have to jump through hoops and make major investments in licenses etc to get stuff working with that app.

The Dolby Vision problem is a Plex problem. I don’t know anything about the rest you mentioned
