Plex displays wrong colours with Dolby Vision on AppleTV 4k

I have a lot of files that could maybe help?

All my Dolby Vision files are profile 5 in a MKV container, none of them will trigger Dolby Vision on my TV? but will trigger HDR?

I am going to try muxing one of the files into MP4 container with DV P5 see if this is able to play in DV?

I also noticed when trying to play these files it doesn’t seem to use the Enchanced Player as the Technical Details show AVPlayer instead of MPV is this inteded?

If you want me to provide samples I can and logs just let me know, happy to help get this issue bumped. @Ridley

Can you confirm that your TV does support DV? If you force the Apple TV into a Dolby Vision mode, does that work?

Please do share some samples. There are a lot of just plain mangled files out there, too.

The Plex app is doing this automatically. The modern/enhanced Plex player doesn’t support DV P5, while the old/legacy Apple player does support DV P5.

Yes, can confirm the TV supports Dolby Vision and can be put into Dolby Vision mode within the ATV even when I have it set like this its the same, normally the ATV is set to 4K SDR 59.98Hz but every file with DV seems to just enable HDR…

Hopefully enchanced player adding support for DV P5 would help since plex would have more control over there own player, rather the relying on ATV own.

how would I make samples? ive even tested some DV P5 LG demo clips that result in HDR,

i could easily provide full files but they would be big

Oh, I wonder if that’s a previous bug that has come back to life.

At one point with DV P5 content, Plex was telling the ATV to switch to HDR10 mode instead of DV mode.

If you change the ATV to a fixed DV mode, and disable Match Dynamic Range, does it behave correctly?

I can confirm later too.

I believe so… set the ATV to Dolby Vision turned off match dynamic range, files played, of course no DV logo since it’s already in DV mode. This does however not switch files into HDR mode that are specifically HDR only

I see the same thing. HDR10 mode is activated instead of DV mode. But it works perfectly (including dynamic brightness) if the Apple TV was already in DV mode.

This was fixed in PMS, at least for a while - or perhaps it was only fixed in an Interim/Preview build. Hopefully it can be fixed again.

The Apple TV has surprisingly good tone mapping. Do you see any problems from SDR or HDR content if you leave the Apple TV set to DV mode?

Thanks Hopefully so @Ridley a are you aware of the above.

@Volts ATV does have good dynamic tone mapping, but I do think colors look better in SDR (maybe due to 4:4:4 Chroma) mode for normal content personally menu’s look better, I suppose its an option.

The only thing I do see been a problem that keeping the ATV in DV mode also stops it entering HDR mode. I have some files that are HDR only.

I have the exact same sentiment. Thank you for pursuing this issue, but I can only conclude myself that it has stranded and has no priority for Plex. If ever testing is needed, feel free to reach out. But for now I’m switching to HDR instead as well.

@Elan is this issue abandoned?

Will ping internally, I know there was progress.

I would like the iPad Pro looked into as well please. I’m not sure if it is affected in the same way, but want to double check.

Thanks for the response @elan - can I just ask… There seems to be some inference that DV will never be supported by the new player due to “licensing” issues. Is this actually the case? If we know that, then we can stop hanging on waiting for a resolution, but my understanding was that the licensing issues only come into play when transcoding DV and there’s no need to do that - it can be direct played.

I certainly think there has been a good degree of crossed wires, and raking over old ground in this thread - all of which has just served to cloud the issue.

Would be good if you could bring some clarity!

Thanks!

Edit : Just seen the post about Linus’ video and went and watched it. He has some very valid points, and hopefully the Plex team will take it onboard in a constructive fashion and put the feature creep on hold and address the core functionality which is what sold most of us Plex in the early days. And given that, this thread is also one of the reasons why people are jumping ship to other solutions like Infuse.

Well blow me down with a feather!!

I think they have only gone and fixed it… in 8.15 (5023)

Definitely shows in the release notes like it was addressed but when I went to go and test a 4K DV File and still got some greenish pink tint. tvOS 16.3.

No, DV still is not working properly on any file I tested on the first gen aTV 4k.

I’ll investigate more, but my go to test file was always The Batman and it never triggered DV logo on my TV. It certainly does now, and I’m on the 2022 ATV 4K

Edit: tested Deadpool 2 - also triggers DV.

However… I’ve just remembered that I have something activated by @DaveBinM for testing stuttering files. Wonder if that in conjunction with the update has fixed things?

This…

Always worked for me on newer iOS devices. Never on older ones.
Could not test with a newer atB though.
My goto file was justice league, the b/w one. Still Sound with no videos.

let us know when you test some more.

I can confirm Profile 5 mkv files playing correctly on the latest beta build! ATV 4K 1st gen, files are converted (not transcoded) to mp4 container on the fly and play using the native AVPlayer instead of Plex’s mpv. Finally! I haven’t tried playing Profile 8 files, not much hope there (even though Infuse will support them in the next version).
