Plex displays wrong colours with Dolby Vision on AppleTV 4k

Tested Ambulance & No Time To Die. Both trigger DV. Wonder Woman 1984 just gives a black screen.

What profile are these files? Assuming they are profile 8, it’s probably the same fake DV as always. I haven’t tested any of those yet, though. They certainly did fix profile 5 Dolby Vision playback in this beta, on 8.14 the same files trigger fake HDR.

Profile 5. Working fine at last.

Hey everyone, just wanted to add my findings to this thread. I have been testing Dolby Vision on Plex using an Apple TV 4K with three different files with mixed results:

  1. 4k Dolby Vision Profile 5 HEVC mkv w/AC3 5.1 audio - no issues with tone mapping but only plays in HDR. Does not trigger DV

  2. 1080p Dolby Vision Profile 5 HEVC mp4 w/EAC3 5.1 audio - triggers Dolby Vision with no tone mapping issues but only after analyzing in PMS

  3. 4k Dolby Vision Profile 8 HEVC mkv w/True HD Atmos 7.1 audio - triggers Dolby Vision with no tone mapping issues but only after analyzing in PMS

I don’t know what it is about the Profile 5 mkv but it doesn’t seem to want to trigger DV through Plex. No problems activating DV through Infuse with this same file.

Are you using 8.15 of the ATV app?

No, I’m on 8.14, which appears to be the most recent version available to me in the App Store.

That’s why then. Profile 5 is fixed in 8.15 beta.

Hey, thanks for clarifying. Can you point me in the right direction to sign up for beta on tvOS? I can’t seem to find anything regarding it.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, only mkv profile 5 file playback has been fixed so far. MP4 files stored with dvhe (and almost all of them are) still don’t play at all (constant spinning wheel), I still have to manually (well, using a script) convert them.
Considering Plex is already converting mkv files to mp4 with dvh1 on the fly in 8.15 beta, that should be an easy fix for mp4 dvhe files (since these files are already using the native container). While not as ubiquitous as mkv, it’s also quite a popular format (container), I hope Plex developers don’t ignore it and support playback of these files in the future as well.

Tested with the new version and the only DV media I have left.
Still black screen with spinner and sound. Still plays perfectly fine on the same device in infuse and plays perfectly fine on the plex app on the tv itself.

are they mp4’s? As cassiusclyde mentioned, that’s still broken for me too.

The one I have left is an mp4, yes.

Can I get a sample of that one, please?

Sure. I PMed you the link.

Any updates here?

From my POV this is the way how to handle this topic: Infuse 7.5 - Trailers & Smart Groups | Firecore

For some strange reason Infuse and Firecore are able to deliver this feature for more than two years(!) now without any problem.

And for some equally strange reason we all in this thread here still have to deal with people from Plex who seem to essentially be gaslighting us for the same amount of time.

It seems like the DV playback is quite easy to provide (re. Infuse) but the priorities of Plex are different and instead of admitting to this we now have two years of conversation of “I don’t understand,” “Can you send an example,” and “it is working for us” from the fine people from Plex.

…and to add insult to injury, the Plex client for my LG TV is perfectly capable of playing most DV sources while the AppleTV client still is not delivering 95% of the time.

I have now given up on Plex in this regard - unfortunately, because I really like the product and I have been paying for it for many years.

What is the most disappointing aspect of this is that I have come to believe that Plex is not communicating in good faith with us here. Whenever someone asks for a status or an update we get deafening silence or a new round of “can you provide an example.”

I don’t think this is necessary - I guess everyone here would be able to deal with a “we understand the problem, can replicate it, but because of our overall strategy this is not something we will prioritise for the near future.”

Sorry for the rant. I don’t even know why I am writing this, because I am sure it will lead to the same “result” as all the mails that came before mine, i.e. none.

Just had to get it off my chest after getting this quite different communication from the people at firecore / Infuse that shows how very differently a company can handle this…

Don’t want to let this die - we’re still having issues with Dolby Vision on AppleTV

It has literally been two years on this issue. Plex really does not care to fix it.

I just renewed Infuse Pro for another year.
