Plex + Docker: Plex goes offline

I have been having this problem on/off for the better part of a month where Plex goes offline and I cannot restart the container. Any attempts result in the following error: “Error response from daemon: cannot kill container: plex: tried to kill container, but did not receive an exit event”. During this time Plex is unreachable via web (direct URL) or via any client device. Tautilli is set up to send me notifications when Plex goes offline. The only way to recover is to reboot the Plex server.

This issue has now occurred across two different devices. First on a GMtek G5 mini PC which has been running since mid-May without any issues. Now, it has happened on my previous server, a Beelink EQ12, which was in place for over a year until I replaced it in May with the G5. I have ran through this DBRepair tool and it has not detected any issues. Heck, I have even tried using ChatGPT to help comb through the logs in case I am missing anything but everything seems “normal”, yet Plex becomes inaccessible.

Anyone willing to help investigate this with me? I’d be willing to throw some coffee/lunch money to anyone who can help me nail this problem down. It has been driving me (and my users aka family) nuts!

I had some friends assist me in trying to bring my Plex server down today and we were quite successful! I had what I believe are crashes at:

  • 14:27 - after crash I removed /tmp as transcode directory and reduced buffer from 600 to 240
  • 14:45 - after crash I deleted Codecs directory to see if this would resolve the issue
  • 18:56 - after crash I downgraded Plex to 1.41.3 from 1.41.9
  • 19:34 - crashed again on 1.41.3

My only theory is that it might be related to whenever a transcode job is running, but I am not certain. Any help here would be greatly appreciated. The attached logs seem to only contain the 19:34 crash.

Signal 15 is a SIGTERM. This is the polite way to ask PMS to shutdown orderly.

SIGKILL would be mean and nasty. (Kill everything now – Don’t care)
SIGSEGV would simulate a memory fault

In this log snippet,

  1. Terminate (shutdown in orderly manner) received.
  2. Logged “Ordered to stop server” in logs.
  3. Killed the playbacks (signal 9 – SIGKILL)
  4. Shut everything down
  5. Closed the database

Do you have a timer somewhere or a memory limit set for the container?
( an OOM – Out of Memory – can be set to issue SIGTERM )

Hey ChuckPa, that may be a red herring. 19:35 is when I ssh’ed into the host and issued a reboot after receiving a notification from Tautilli that was Plex was down at 19:34. See first screenshot below. Matter of fact, Plex just went down again tonight around 22:56 and I tried restarting the docker service (sudo systemctl restart docker.service) but it hung, so I rebooted it around 23:06 (sudo reboot). Logs are attached for this event.

To my knowledge, I do not have any timer defined within Ubuntu (24.04.03) or any memory limit defined with the container. Below is my docker run config.

The /home//data/media folder is a mount to my Synology NAS. Below is what I have in my /etc/fstab.

For what it is worth, I am currently running this on a Beelink EQ12 (CPU is N100) I reimaged last week. It is as vanilla as it can be from the ISO. All I did was install GPU tools, update to use the HWE kernel (currently 6.14), install Docker, and create a Plex container. This Beelink was in use for over a year without any issues until I swapped it for a GMKtec NUCbox G5 (CPU is N95) in May 2025. Problems seemed to have started in July 2025, or at least that is what I noticed it happening often enough to warrant investigation.

If 19:35 is when it happened, the delay between the event and when you grabbed the logs is too long.

These seem to be the most stable.

PMS has been upgraded to 1.41.6 and LogNumFiles=”10” has been added to the Preferences.xml.

You referenced Plex Media Server.5.log; is there any reason why Plex Media Server.2.log was skipped over? That log has the time period from when PMS went unreachable (reported from Tautilli at 19:34) and from when I manually restarted the host (19:35:35).

Prior to the 19:35:35 SIGTERM, there were several client sessions taking place. The sessions appear to go idle, PMS does some ViewStateSyncs and EPG cleanup, and then closes out the “idle” sessions.

That’s the thing: those sessions were active but playback suddenly stopped. In the Plex Media Server.2.log you can see no activity between the last chunk of data and when PMS starts syncing view state. It is during this time when Tautilli is reporting a disconnect from PMS.

Therefore, the timeline is:

  • 19:32 - Client sessions suddenly stop
  • 19:34 - Notification sent to phone “Plex is down”
  • 19:35 - PMS host is manually rebooted in response

I am going through the logs from when PMS went offline late last night (Aug. 7, 2025 around 22:53). Here is what I see after reviewing the Plex Media Server.1.log and the tautulli.log:

  • Prior to 22:53, there are two playback sessions taking place
    • Last activity for user ‘n***7’ was 22:53:10
    • Last activity for user ‘d***35’ was 22:53:14
  • 22:53:29 - Tautulli is reporting a connect timeout and marks Plex down 3 seconds later
  • 22:55:48 - Tautulli sends notification to phone
  • 22:56:36 - PMS begins to terminate timed out sessions
  • 22:56:52 - PMS host has docker.service restarted by user

For what it is worth, during this time that Plex is down I cannot access the web UI via the local IP address (10.1.2.30). I have a health check in the Docker run config ( --health-cmd=“curl -f http://localhost:32400/web || exit 1”) and during this time Docker shows the container as “unhealthy”.

That logfile disparity is my doing. I started discussing one event, and then immediately threw another one your way. My apologies.

Here are the logs for the original post, discussing the PMS outage at 19:32. In this zip you’ll find the Plex Media Server.2.log file with the snippet from 19:32.

@ChuckPa QUICK UPDATE:

I completely rebuilt my Plex server–reloaded the OS, installed a fresh copy of Plex in Docker, and allowed Plex to rebuild all metadata (with one exception: I copied the watch state from previous Plex database). Without failure, I can easily get Plex into this unresponsive state just by starting two 4K transcodes. I figured, “maybe something is wrong with Plex” and therefore installed Plex natively into the OS. Started two transcodes and voila, Plex went down again! Here’s a screenshot of the last error I saw in the console before things went dark.

I’ll attach the logs from when this occurred. In my opinion, this is pointing to an issue with Plex and not the server, which has handled 6 concurrent transcodes in the past without any issues (per Tautulli).

Please let me know what additional details or tests I can run to help identify root cause. I can even grant remote access, if you wish.

Why are you putting transcoder / EAE temp files in /run ?
( it usually has little to no space for large files )

They don’t belong there. /run is for single-file stuff (lock & pid files and pipes)

Question: Have you ever tried running the native app and using a sytstemd override to point the PLEX_MEDIA_SERVER_APPLICATION_SUPPORT_DIR to where /config is? (also change User and Group)

Hi Chuck. Sorry I haven’t responded yet. I think I may have identified the root cause of my issue.

Long story short, I might be dealing with a layer 1 problem on my NAS where my media is stored. After several tests reproducing the issue, I was able to nail it down to my 10-Gb Mellanox SFP adapter that is causing NFS traffic to stunt whenever a Plex transcode is taking place. When this happens, all of my NFS connected devices in my home (~5 devices total) are having their NFS connections frozen. I can easily see the NFS traffic on the NAS flatline.

For now I am using a 2.5 Gb RJ45 connection off my NAS until a new 10-Gb NIC arrives next week. I’ll do further testing to get 100% confirmation that the NIC is indeed the issue and will follow up with any findings.
