Plex doesn't stream with subtitles on

Hi, I’ve build my video library with MakeMKV and most movies stream perfectly on my XB1. But in various cases, when I choose subtitles, Plex leaves a black screen and won’t stream. When I then switch back to no-subs Plex stream perfectly again. In MakeMKV I didn’t do any settings/config. Just 1-1 convert to MKV including everything. Any ideas?

What type of CPU/what kind of server do you have? When you enable subtitles currently the video must be transcoded in order to burn the subtitles into the stream. If you try and play the same video via Plex web with the subtitles enabled does it play correctly?

I have seen some reports of the One not liking certain MKV’s, but we haven’t been able to trace it to anything specific (It also shouldn’t be what’s causing your issue as the subtitles are causing a transcode and not a direct play/stream)

Hi jmckee,
I’m running the Plex Media Server on a Dell Latitude E5510 with an Intel Core i3 2.4 GHz processor, 8 Gb RAM. If I play one of those videos via Plex Web with enabled subtitles it indeed also doesn’t plays correctly. So it’s not an XB1 issue. Any suggestions?

Hi jmckee,
I’ve just upgraded the Plex Media Server to version 0.9.12.8 and voila the subtitles work! Joohoo. Thanks for helping. Regards, Zach.

lick the Windows key to open the Start Menu and search for Device Manager. In Windows 8.1 and 10, click Windows key + S to open the search menu. If there is a yellow exclamation mark next to Display Adapters, this could be your video playback problem. Double-clicking your adapter will bring up the properties menu where your device information will be displayed, along with any errors.

Selecting the Drivers tab will show you several options, including Update Driver. Clicking it will allow you to choose to either Search Automatically or Browse Your Computer. If you have already downloaded the driver directly from the manufacturer website, select the latter, browse to their location and install. If not, select Search Automatically and Windows will trawl your computer and the Internet to find the correct drivers for your hardware and then install them.
