I used to Plex last year and I absolutely loved it. It is, without a doubt, the best media server/centre available for home use. However, there is one massive flaw, and that is that embedded .srt subtitles simply don’t show up on any of my HD movies. This eventually drove me to XBMC, which is a fine media centre, but nowhere near as polished as Plex. I have therefore come back to Plex, and signed up for a Plexpass. Having reinstalled Plex, and I am really sad and confused to see that the subtitles issue still hasn’t been fixed. What I find particularly sad is that during all the time I spent away from Plex (at least six months, probably more), all kinds of new features have been added but this single issue, that even crappy Windows Media Player is able to cope with, hasn’t been resolved.
I’m going to stick with Plex anyway, and I’ll just have to use media player/VLC to play foreign films, but I have a couple of questions:
Is there any kind of fix scheduled?
Is there a beta version coming out with this fix?
Is there any short-term workaround?
I have tried disabling directplay, forcing subtitles, manually enabling subtitles and nothing seems to work. Please help.
Which version of Plex Media Center are you using? Because I was under the impression that the embedded subs issue for Windows was solved with the update of PMS.
I’m using 0.9.7.11.386. I’ve installed this on my HTPC and my laptop, and both have the subtitle issue. In addition, trying to change the font used for subtitles doesn’t work either, as the font is just listed as ?0?.
And which client have you tried with? Have you tried with the latest Plex HT? Also, have you tried with the latest [PMC](http://plex.r.worldssl.net/plex-laika/0.9.5.4/Plex-Media-Center-v3213059-en-US.exe)?
I myself have tons of issues with subtitles, though I have more success via HT then I do using Plex on my google tv, roku, or android phone. HT will show my srts as "unknown" and sometimes they work, and sometimes they are just totally jumbled trash. When I am using mkv and I have my subs embedded it is really a 75% chance it will fail for me. Heck, sometimes I will tell it to switch audio tracks and it won't do that either! I have yet to get any subs to work direct connect on any platform thus far, embedded or srt. Occasionally I get some subs to work on the roku that refuse to work on the google tv (sony) so I am pretty sure that this is the player's issue, not the server. Additionally I have to scratch my head when one of my subtitles options shows up NULL. I tried XBMC today, and while I would not want to use it regularly, it had no issues playing any of my subs, either embeded or via srt. Nor does vlc have any issues, so I am pretty sure the encodes /srts are correct.
