Plex download with new update

Hey all,

Did we lose the download next x episodes feature with this new update? I only see it on individual episodes now.

Yep. You can only download an entire season, or individual episodes currently. Fun.

Working as intended, according to the staff. They are saying this is the ‘correct’ way to use the app, for some reason.

Well they removed core functionality
that is not working as intended. The entire reason I purchased the lifetime plex pass was for the downloads
and to say the downloads functions have been rocky would be an understatement. To fully remove functionality is crazy to me when it was actually working.

I agree completely. There are only two possibilities that I can see. Either the team is incompetent and rushed this update before it was ready, or there is some kind of internal sabotage going on as a protest of the corporate greed. The community seems split on this issue but I wouldn’t rule anything out at this point.

So what can we do about it. Clearly complaining on this forum doesn’t do anything
Does anyone have a dev contact or anything?

I am unable to download ANYTHING from my server to my iOS device. When I click the download button for either an episode or a season, I first get a confirmation dialog that the episode or the season’s episodes are queued. When I go to check on my “In Progress” downloads I see an error with very little information: Episode #, TV Show Name - S# - E#, the server name, and ‘Download Failed’. When I click the error message it opens a dialog that tells me I can either remove from the list of in-progress downloads or add it back to the queue.

IMPORTANT to note I have a paid lifetime subscription to Flex Pass, and I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app on my iPad with no improvement.

I’m getting the same. Even on original quality it’s trying to transcode for some reason and it fails

I found a resolution (described on the webpage below). Simple explanation: The root cause of this issue is Plex uses DNS rebinding for its plex.direct domain, which is used to download media for offline viewing. The first solution is to change the DNS servers that are defined by your router. Many users may be using their ISP DNS server, which would mitigate DNS rebinding attacks. These mitigations would prevent Plex from downloading media for offline viewing. By changing my iPad’s DNS Servers to Cloudflare (1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1) the problem was resolved. Shocking, I revert the update and I have 0 issues. Thank you so much for the help man!

On the one hand, I guess it is great that I wasn’t crazy, and after spending like 10 minutes trying to figure it out, it is true you just can’t download stuff to your phone anymore (and the stuff that was previously downloaded, can seemingly only be sorted by the oh so useful download length??)

But seriously?? The biggest reason I got a plex pass in the first place was for offline downloads. Why on earth did this get broken? Is there any timeline to fix?

@parallax1: See my post above about how I was able to restore downloads to my iPad/iPhone. And I agree that the way downloads are „organized“ is unfortunate. Here‘s a guess on how to deal with that (i.e., the DISorganization in the Downloads folder). If you have a video downloaded, then the download will play from the device instead of streaming when you touch „Watch/Resume“ from the Home screen. If you‘re offline and you try to watch something not downloaded, you‘ll get an error. Otherwise it‘ll play from the downloaded file. But I repeat: That‘s a guess.

Strange I can download movies no problem, but if I try to download any TV Show (episode or season) it just sits on Waiting

Also joining in to say that I’m pretty unhappy with the new version of downloads. I used to just sync any unwatched episodes on my phone for flights and travel and now I have to go through and reorganize all my downloads.

I will say that as of July 21, 2025 the windows app does still have the old functionality.
