Plex DVR keeps recording episodes I already have

Has anyone solved this? I recently discovered I have this issue. I am running latest PMS version 1.13.9.5439 on an ubuntu server VM.

Here is a log for the show The Office. It for some reason can’t recognize that the episode is already there

Would need more information than just log entries that it doesn’t see the file already exists.

Does the file exist in the same library you are recording to? Plex does not look at any other libraries except the library the show is setup to record to. When I first started using Plex I got duplicate recordings because I was recording to a “DVR TV” library but during Post Processing moved the recordings to my “TV Show” library. Plex would not find the episode in my “DVR TV” library so would record it again.

The DVR records to the same library and same folder that the show exists. I have no post processing. Please let me know what other information would be helpful.

In the picture you can see that the episode money has copies. Although, now that I look at this these episode number and episode names are wrong. Episode money in season 4 should be s04e04

The only thing I can think of since your screenshot shows the media stored on FreeNAS drive is does the Plex Media Server have the Empty Trash enabled? If the Plex Server does not see the drive immediately it could be removing the media from the library with Empty Trash enabled. Plex then sees the show as not being in the library so records the show. I had to turn off the Empty Trash on my Shield PMS as I am pointing it to a network share for recordings. I’ve been seeing the same issue with a particular series (Kitchen Nightmares USA). In the log it believes there’s no match in the library, but in reality it’s already recorded the same episode in some cases upwards of three times. It doesn’t seem to be a problem for other series recordings.

Windows Media Center automatically skip episodes that had been successfully recorded within the last 30 days even if the episode was deleted from the server. Wish Plex would add this feature.

Just following up that this is still a seriously annoying problem. Plex does not appear to have any internal logic for ignoring copies of an episode which already exist. This seems to be some really basic functionality and I now have no solution except to go back every month or so and manually delete (copy 1), (copy 2), (copy 3), all of the same damn episode of a show.

Plex devs - PLEASE make the server aware of when it is trying to record dozens of copies of the same existing episode already in the library.

OK - I would have started a new topic, but apparently I am not permitted to start a new topic, so I chose this one because my problem is somewhat similar.

We watch many CBS shows which air on channel 2.1 (CBS). Unfortunately, the local ION station, which airs lots of reruns of CBS programs. I want to limit recordings to new airings on 2.1. I have tried both setting the recording to “new airings only” and limiting recordings to channel 2.1 (and both of these). No matter what I do, it still records ALL airings on 12.1!

I’m wondering if the problem is that channel “12.1” includes “2.1” - thus confusing Plex.

I’m running Plex on Windows 10.

Any ideas?

I appreciate your answer, but it is astonishing that it does not look in the library folder for the show, as that is where Plex has the shows. I process files with MCEBuddy and other processes and put them into the destination file system where they should go.

And then it will turn around and re-record them, I guess because it is looking where it recorded it rather than where the library is.

Sounds like broken design to me, or at least something that needs an option in the server set up (to look where recorded, and in library file for that item (TV, Movie).

Since I see no other post in this thread by you I can’t really comment much on what you are saying because I know very little about your Plex Media Server configuration. However, like you I process my files using mcebuddy and move files around from the recording directory location and Plex never records an episode I already have.

My setup: TV Shows library with numerous drives/directories included in the library. I record everything to the TV Shows library specifying a recording location of G:\TV_DVR. From there the completed recordings are moved to F:\Recorded TV. From F:\Recorded TV they are processed by mcebuddy and later manually moved to another folder on the same F: drive. All of these drive.folder locations are all configured in the TV Shows library. Plex always knows what files are in my library and keeps track of them in it’s database. When the DVR Scheduler goes to setup future recordings it looks at the EPG, looks at my recording settings and determines what needs to be recorded. I posted a snip from my logs back in Sep '18 showing this process and Plex ignoring a series of Big Bang Theory episodes that existed in my library.

Why you are seeing duplicate recordings I have no clue as you are just jumping into this thread and didn’t provide any specifics other than your comment that Plex should look at the file system. It does when it periodically scans the filesystem.

Perhaps some more information about your setup would be benefical. Are you recording to a DVR library and then moving to a TV Show library? If so that is your problem. Plex only looks in the library where the recording is specified to be recorded to, no other library locations are searched. If your permanent storage is on external storage as mentioned in my previous post perhaps turn off the Empty Trash Automatically setting, if Plex scans and for any reason the external storage is not immediately available Plex may remove the media that is identified as being on the external storage. During a later scan Plex would potentially find the media again on the external storage and add the media back to the library as all recently added.

Hi -

  My setup is that Plex is recording into the destination directory

(local storage) and leaves it as a .ts file. I then manually put
those files (I preview them first to determine what I want to
keep) and put those in the MCEBuddy queue for processing in place,
with remove the source file checked. So the .ts gets processsed
(resized to720p commercialls removed) and left in the same
directory. When plex scans, it picks them up and we watch them.
The next time the show airs (record previous and new because I
want shows that have been shown before and first time aired, just
not those that exist on the system now) it re-records then. I
suspect that the logic is that since it is higher resolution it
will record them, I don’t know.

  So the choices that would help me are along the lines of "if show

on file < 720p or doesn’t exist, then record". But the
algorithm for recording isn’t very bright, so such a thing is not
available. I suppose I could write some scripting for MCEBuddy (if
I knew how) that would look at the resolution of the existing .mp4
or .mkw and decide what to do, but it would be best if the
recorder itself had choices such as if doesn’t exist, or does
exist and less than 720p as choices, before tying up a tuner for
30 minutes to 3 hours.It’s the reason I bought a third tuner (6
channels) because half the stuff is already recorded, and it was
wasting so many channels.

So if you have the option to replace lower resolution items selected and you are converting the video from 1080 to 720 Plex would record the airing again based on what you have specified for this setting.

And yes, that could be the logic. Hence my remark about needing more choices on when to record. I try not to store > 720p due to the storage requirements. So, I would love more granularity in the rule. Sometimes what is stored is 320p or 240p, and if I get the opportunity to replace those, I will. But if that is the only reason it is re-recording (and I have not turned that off to see), then I will end up giving up on getting higher quality recordings.

I would imagine the Plex Media Server log file would state when it is setting up a recording of a file you already have why it is scheduled.

I may have overlooked that, but I did look and didn’t see it. Maybe you have to turn on verbose logging to see it.

Shouldn’t need verbose. I transcoded a copy of Big Bang Theory S5E21 that is airing tonight and replaced the copy currently in my library. The following log entries were found:

Jan 14, 2019 17:08:49.029 [8100] DEBUG - DVR:Subscription: We found a match in the library for 'The Big Bang Theory - E21 - The Hawking Excitation'
Jan 14, 2019 17:08:49.029 [8100] DEBUG - DVR:Subscription: We found a better quality version, we'll grab it.

So the Scheduler found an existing version but detected that the episode airing tonight was a better quality than the copy I have in the library.

I sure missed that. Where is that logfile located? It’s been 6 months since I looked and I don’t recall seeing such a thing.

It’s in the Plex Media Server log file. Go to Settings / Troubleshooting and click the Download logs link. Extract the log files and look at the 6 versions of the Plex Media Server.log files. Plex Media Server.log is the most recent, Plex Media Server.1.log is next most recent, followed by Plex Media Server.2.log, up to Plex Media Server.5.log which is the oldest set of logs.

Since you mentioned transcoding recordings to lower resolution I am only speculating that Plex is attempting to replace a lower resolution copy. If you want to post the logs and shows that are being rerecorded I can look, or you should be able to search for the phrase “we found a better quality version.”

So, same four TV shows are having problem (I am currently recording at least 30 different shows).

Also noticeable is, these TV shows have looong name. This gets multiplied by Plex naming convention that keeps repeating the same name as prefix before season name. E.g., Season 04/Married … With Children (1987) - S04E22 - The Agony of DeFeet (copy 1).mp4

I am on Mac OS X that has 255 filename length limit. I am wondering if Plex is hitting that issue and is unable to apply simple logic like matching episode identifier alone to make the decision (e.g., S04E22 in the example above to decide a match).

BTW, I am postprocessing to convert to mp4 but I don’t change resolution. Also, I tried disabling “replace lower resolution” option and that didn’t help.
