I know 2 months have passed since the last post to this thread, but I’m having this problem too and have spent a long time trying to solve it. I’ve failed 
but I think I have some new thoughts and questions to add…
In my case, most of the duplicate recordings are for “The Office” and I noticed that a previous poster has mentioned this show too. I’m suspicious in this case that the problem might be related to the show not being uniquely/properly defined.
There are apparently many versions of “The Office” including the US version (TVDB#73244 ), and original British version (TVDB#78107) and many others. The one I’m recording is the popular US version, but Plex originally identified this show as “The Office (FI)” (TVDB#324675). I had fixed the mismatch when I first noticed this. I wondered if the duplicates might be due to the different versions of the show? I’m not sure! I tried matching the show back to the (FI) version, deleting and recreating the recordings and it first this looked good. But the next time I opened/refreshed the Recordings screen, it was showing the intention to record duplicates again
I contacted the provider of the XMLTV program guide (IceTV in Sydney Australia) to ask if they could identify the show as “The Office (US)” on their program guide. They replied that they could not change the name of the show, but that they already supplied the correct TVDB number in their program guide, and that Plex must not be using this information.
Have other people had similar experiences that could be related to incorrectly identified shows?
Does anyone know if Plex uses the TVDB number provided in an XLMTV program guide to properly identify a show? And if not, how to request that they do?
Turns I yesterday I replied to a two year old thread for this issue, so instead of threadjacking that ancient post I’ll just come here.
I experience this issue as well. Only on a couple shows that are series–but on every single standalone documentary without season number and episode number.
- dvr set to record all
- set to replace lower res
- no post processing
- recorded to same library as stored in
I’ve recorded the entire series of ‘The Grim Adventures of Bill & Mandy’ now 5-6x. I’ve recorded other standalone or small miniseries documentaries almost a dozen times each episode.
The above shows all the encountered duplicates for Grim. The show is not airing anymore so I can’t get logs.
I can get logs for documentaries (or no s#e# shows) that just record over & over & over though as displayed by this picture:
Future recordings are scheduled, but Plex seems to recognize that they’re already there…
This is still happening. If I have a recording for the episode already, and I have “Replace lower resolution” selected, then PLEX should not re-record the same episode at the same quality. There’s no earthly sense in capturing the same episode again and storing two copies.
Same for me. “Let’s Go Luna!” just records over and over, sometimes upwards of 6 copies of the same episode (even the filenames contain “(Copy 5)”, “(Copy 6)”, etc.). FWIW “Replace lower resolution” is not checked for this recording.
Edit: forgot to mention I’m running 1.16.5.1488 but this has been happening since before the EPG changeover as well.
Just wanted to say that this bug STILL exists as of December 24, 2019. Running PMS 1.18.3.2129 on FreeBSD. Pretty incredible that this issue has been known for well over a year and still hasn’t been fixed.
Not doing any post-processing, optimization, or real-time transcoding. Just straight up recording from a HDHomeRun.
Same issue here running PMS 1.18.6.2368 in the official Plex Inc Docker container on an UnRAID Server.
Yes, the log file states why it is scheduling the recording 
But the statement is wrong!
Example:

Still, the same episode is allready available multiple times, recorded by the same DVR.

The funny thing is, Plex is somehow recognizing that it allready has this episode, still it is recorded.
In the EPG List it shows the same episode on the same channel at the same time twice - Once as allready beeing recorded and once as sheduled to be recorded.
Example on the Schedule for Saturday in the picture below:
One Episode of the Series “Terra X” is listed twice for the same time (Sa. 15.02.20 - 10:06 - 10:59). Once Plex allready recognized that it allready has this episode and lets me play it, but still is scheduling the same episode again for recording on saturday. From Experience with this issue in the past days I can predict that while Plex is recording this one Episode the “Status Marker” showing the running recording will be shown in both entries of the DVR-List (So the grey one and the one with the play button) concurrently.
If this happens with 4 shows at the same time it looks like my HDHomerun has 8 tuners instead ot the four it has
It does not do this with all the shows, for example I did never have a double recording for NCIS, but allways have double, tripple or whatever recordings on the reruns of Charmed.
As Charmed has a longer title in the German translation “Charmed - Zauberhafte Hexen” I am wondering if this could be related to absolute path lengths or filename lenghts.
Ideas ?
Still the same old year+ bug. Long ago reported and seemingly not cared about.
It looks like it’s taking up four tuners, but it’s not. It’s just recording yet another episode every time it airs. I have at least a half dozen different shows that behave like this. Every single airing is recorded, no matter how many times I have it already.
I wiped out my red bull directory in December, only keeping one of each episode and deleting the ones I didn’t want.
Since then I have recorded over 200 episodes, mostly consisting of endless duplicate recordings. I have recorded some episodes 15 times!!! 130 “copy” recordings of already recorded episodes.
This takes up over a 1.6TB and never stops. I seriously record every single red bull signature series event that airs.
Is this because they are all STILL marked new?
Is this because the metadata is fubar and the show year is not 2019 but instead 2012?
Whatever the cause I wish it would stop endlessly recording.

PlexDVRWaker set to wake my system 2 minutes before a scheduled recording
I’m recording Daniel Tiger off PBS for my boys, and I regularly see it schedule recordings for shows I already have in my library, then record them and postprocess them. The weird thing is that I don’t seem to end up with multiple copies of the file in my library. It’s just annoying that it’s tying up my tuner recording a show that I don’t need, especially if there’s a conflict and it could have been recording something else that I don’t have.
I have it set to new and repeat episodes, prefer HD, and replace lower resolution versions. I use a postprocessing script rather than MCEBuddy so there’s no confusion for Plex, and the script converts to h.264 mp4 and uses comskip to place chapter markers at commercials.
It seems every update I’ve seen the past several months has been focused on DVR improvements, so I’m hoping this problem gets solved soon!
Do you make any adjustments to recorded shows afterwards? Eg titles/episode numbers?
We should not be recording airings that are already in the library - unless the details are different and earlier this year we stopped matching to thetvdb and preserved EPG metadata to ensure the metadata did not change - as a change may lead to loss future recordings or duplicate recordings.
You say you are not actually getting multiple files in your library, so I would like to look logs to see what is happening
Please get server logs captured just after one of these unexpected recordings starts and then again after recording completes and post processing completes and the recording discarded
Please indicate what it is and what channel number and time
(I managed to find channels 6.1 and 6.4 being PBS affiliates in your lineup - and I presume it was “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood”)
(Please always give exact details as it would slow down the investigation otherwise - so channel number and channel title + exact series name)

I record Word Girl and The Wild Kratts for my grandkids. TheTVDB information was WILDLY different than the PBS EPG information. I had to re-record all of the shows , I think you will find the previous recordings have bad metadata from TheTVDB.
I have always wondered how Plex keeps track of recorded shows. I assume it just uses the EPG data to check if an episode exists based on series, season and episode number.
I’m curious because my post-processing scripts modify the file name (removes the series name and add some codec information) and metadata to match that of TVDb. This rename doesn’t affect the season/episode number, as that is the information I use to get info from TVDb, but the episode title may change.
I’ve had instances where Plex still records, say, S01E02 even though there is already an episode S01E02 in the library. Then I have 2 files with different episode titles.
If there are discrepancies for the episode between what is in the EPG data and what is in the library then the airing may get recorded again. The EPG does not always have episode numbers and sometimes these are wrong
It was for this reason that earlier this year we stopped matching with thetvdb and preserved EPG data in the library.
Any shows in the library previously matched to thetvdb will continue to be matched and may continue to lead to multiple recordings.
A recommendation was made that DVR recordings should go into dedicated DVR libraries (TV Shows library and Movies library)
I reasoning behind the switch to using EPG make sense, just some of the matching still doesn’t. Maybe some examples will help clarify my question
Wrong season/ep number
So for this case, say the EPG data is How I Met Your Mother, S03E13 - The Platinum Rule. However, from TVDb it should be S03E13 - Ten Sessions. So this will be added to the library as HIMYM S03E13. This is where it gets tricky, but let’s assume that just the episode number from the EPG is wrong and the episode is actually The Platinum Rule, which is E11 on TVDb. So, when my post processing script runs, the file will keep S03E13 but will be renamed to be Ten Sessions. So now it is wrong on my end, but Plex doesn’t know that and just knows that I have S03E13.
The issues is that Plex will sometimes try to record S03E13 again, which doesn’t make sense because that would imply the EPG data has the season/episode information, and Plex knows there is already a S03E13 file.
Missing season/ep info
I have files that record with the year as the season information. For these files, I completely understand Plex recording them multiple times as S2020 will not match any show.
There isn’t really a great solution to this, and perhaps I will move to using dedicated libraries for DVR, just looking for more clarification I guess.

Hmm, there’s a chance I may have Plex-danced a few of these episodes when they had incorrect metadata. I’ll keep an eye out for it happening again and capture the logs to share if it does.

It recorded from 4am - 5am PDT. According to the log files, it thinks it was replacing a lower resolution item with a higher resolution item, but both are SD 480p. I didn’t get a screenshot of this but the recording it was replacing was from the day before and had not been touched by me in any way.

Find the 3 files starting with this in the filename tv.plex.providers.epg.cloud
Copy the 3 files out and zip the copy and attach with the main DB zip - they may be too big to attach here - so please upload somewhere and give me a download link

If it helps, I just looked at my DVR schedule for today and see the same Nature Cat episode is scheduled to record again at 7pm - same 9.4 KQEDK, same SD quality, same apparent EPG info.
