My Challenge is to best use and HDHomeRun Prime for Cable TV recording and a Quattro for OTA recordings. As of now Plex does not allow the EPG to “see” both sets of channels. The only work around I know of is to buy a second Subscription. Correct?
So then the question comes of how to manage these efficiently. I guess I would have to go into the Plex App to be able to manage the playing of recorded shows and keep signing in and out of the separate Servers.
Yikes sounds messy. Any thoughts or advice. Any discount on a second Server sub?
You do not need two plex.tv accounts to have two separate PMS hosts on the same network. You simply install PMS on another machine and claim it with your plex.tv account.
I don’t believe that you have to purchase a separate subscription for Plex Pass. I have a lifetime Plex Pass and have two Plex servers running in my house.
Running multiple servers becomes easier with the new interface changes coming to the clients. No more switching servers and you can aggregate content from multiple servers on the home page.
The only thing I had to do was figure out Remote Access for two servers. Had to set different ports in the Remote Access Server settings and forward those ports to the respective machines in my router.
Great I had no idea I could do this.
Thanks very much for the detailed reply.
Maybe for a particular two server setup but a lot of people who run two servers that just got the updated UI changes to the Roku app would beg to differ…
It’s not the greatest implementation but I like the paradigm shift in Plex away from being Server centric to Content centric. My Roku home page now has the “Just Added” from three separate servers on it. That’s pretty awesome. The old server way was clunky.
But they really need to tweak the UI a lot. And some intro videos for people to see how to do stuff would be nice.
I now have PMS up and running on my new Nvidia Shield and an attached 8TB WD HDD fully recognized.
Couple of questions.
-
I can see how to switch between the recordings on my PC and back to future recordings on the Shield/WD HDD. However the PMS on the Shield appears to have no access to DVR controls or for me to direct to either of the HDHomeRun Prime of the Quattro OTA recorder. In looks instead of PMS to looks more the Plex App functionality which I could see on a Roku device and no more.
What am I missing? -
In view of (1) what’s the best source of material I can read to get more up to speed?
Thanks.
Plex calls them “Support Articles” but it seems like the manual to Plex to me:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/
I’d probably start here:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/226463767-frequently-asked-questions-dvr-live-tv/
Thanks for the reply and Yes those support articles are informative.
However, my problem remains that when I click on PLEX want comes up is more like a home page for the Plex non sever App running as a Slave. i.e. I see no way to configure this version of Plex to use my “Quattro” OTA for tuning and I see no EPG to instigate recording of shows etc.
I have clicked about everything and nothing brings up what I need.
Suggests or other more in depth Shield Plex manuals would be great.
Are we even sure that the Shield PLEX server supports Live TV/DVR.??? I know the FreeBSD version of the server doesn’t support Live TV/DVR… This would be very easy with 2 Windows boxes each running a PLEX server with a turner… Of course now I don’t know how this would display on clients with the new unified and content centric UI and not being able switch to each server separately…
Sounds like you’re opening the Plex client on the Shield instead of the server. I would assume that you’d open a web browser on a PC and go to the Shield’s IP Address, colon and port. Like this:
I don’t have a Shield to try it. You might move this conversation from the General boards to a Shield specific area for more help. There are some Shield enthusiasts out there that will help.
This page:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/225877427-supported-dvr-tuners-and-antennas/
Shows what tuners are supported on the Shield.
I think you are right about my seeing merely a Plex App except that under settings it lists Plex Media Server Running v1.14.0.5470. Most certainly I am NOT seeing the Server type menus though.
So now I am really confused. I clicked the clink you provided and it failed on me.
Thanks
You weren’t supposed to click on that link… You were supposed to type “http://(the IP address of your shield, i.e. 192.168.1.2 or whatever your shield’s is):32400” into the address bar of your browser…
Understood.
One thing I notice is that when I check recently updated Apps I have BOTH PLEX and PLEX Media Server.
Q: SHould I have both?
If you are running the both the server and the app on your Shield, then yes, I supposed you would…
I don’t understand why I would need a Plex App as well as a PMS. Perhaps I should uninstall the Plex App (have to find the way to uninstal LOL) and maybe then PMS would appear? It presently does not give me a choice of which to use as only a single PLEX comes up as a choice to enter and that s NOT giving me the usual PMS menus I am expecting.
Appreciate the help…
As I don’t have a Shield, I can’t say… But if you go to a regular computer or laptop and type what we told you into the address bar of your bowser, you should be able to get to the server setting running on the Shield… It should open to something like this…
