I am new to Plex Live TV and have a question. I currently have my main PLEX server on a Windows-10 Desktop. I have PLEX client apps on several devices throughout my home. If I add a HomeRun Tuner & HD antenna to this PC mainly to bring in Local Channels will all of these “new” channels become available on all of the existing clients and will I have DVR capabilities on all of them as well? Or, do I need a separate Tuner/Antenna for each client?? Thanks in advance.

All of the channels will be available to all of the clients, and all of the clients will be able to set/maintain recordings. However, keep in mind that you are limited to the number of tuners that your HDHR tuner has available. For example, if your HDHR device has 4 tuners, and you are recording three shows concurrently and someone is watching another channel on your HDHR from one of your Plex clients, then you are out of tuners. An attempt to watch a fifth channel from a different client would fail.

All Plex clients would have access to all of your recorded TV, and you can do as many concurrent streams as your server and network can handle. If your clients are able to direct play or direct stream (e.g. no video transcoding) then you should be able to concurrently play a signficant number of recordings.

Finally, if you are using Plex with your HDHR device then it isn’t a good idea to use the HDHR client as well - only use Plex clients. Plex won’t be able to know if the HDHR client is using one of your tuners, and therefore might try to start a recording an fail because the HDHR client has tuner(s) tied up.

Regardless, then number of total tuners is available to the server, and therefore to all clients. You can even have multiple HDHR devices on your server… if you have one HDHR with four tuners, and another with 2 tuners, then the Plex server will manage all 6 tuners for all of your clients.

Does that make sense? Please feel free to ask questions or for clarifications!

Edit: You do need a Plex pass to use Live TV/DVR (I notice that Plex Pass isn’t noted next to your user name.)

Yes, this is very clear and answers all my concerns. Thank you for the detailed response. My next step will be to order the hardware required. Because we rarely will be watching tv on more than one client at a time, I would assume that the 2-tuner device would suffice vs the 4-tuner OR should I bite the bullet and order the 4-tuner? I already have the Plex pass, not sure why it isn’t showing up??

I believe the problem with my Plex pass not showing up is due to myself having 2 accounts with differing emails. I need to delete one of these accounts. Actually the account used by Plex Forum is not my “active” account. My active account is tied to my frontier.com email, not gmail.

You are correct, if you are watching on only one client at a time with no other tuner activity then the two tuner model will meet your needs.

Do think about how much recording you will be doing. If there are times you want to watch a show, and also record two other shows at the same time, then you will need more than two tuners. (If you are recording two shows and watching something else that was previously recorded, then two tuners will meet your needs.)

If you are going to be recording shows then that will require fairly significant disk space. How much disk is needed is driven by the resolution (e.g. 720p, 1080p, etc) you are recording and how much you record.

Again, thanks for the quick & thorough response.
