Plex not finding all channels, repeated searches with Hauppauge WinTV-quadHD (Model 1651xx-1, Dual..

I am unplugging from Wave Broadband triple play. In preparation for the change, I have decided to use PLEX with the Hauppauge WinTV-QuaHD card to record local channels. The local channels are still available from Wave Broadband without a set top box. Eventually I will switch to an HD Antenna. I have successfully scanned channels into our Samsung TV and scanned the same channels using the WinTV8 app that came with the Hauppauge. In all I am getting ~60 local channels that do not require a box.

The problem that I am having is that when PLEX scans the channels it detects ~60 but, it shows all but one as “protected.” The odd thing is that PLEX is not picking up the same local channels as both the TV and the WinTV8 app are.

To troubleshoot, I have also uninstalled the WinTV8 app as recommended to avoid conflicts. I have upgraded to the latest Plex release 1.8.1.4139. I then rebooted the Windows 10 box and reran the Plex scan multiple times. I am totally stumped as what to do next. Below are pictures of what I am seeing.

I am hoping someone can provide some guidance on this one, as I really want to un plug using Plex.

Is this forum even monitored?

Someone would need to be able to relate to your specific situation. I know I can’t as i use a HD Homerun Prime and a HVR-2250. My experience with channels marked as protected on my Prime is that it is related to DRM. I don’t see how a ClearQAM tunner could have that issue though. With no cable card involved there shouldn’t be DRM involved at all.

What did you use for your channel map when setting ujp the DVR

You said in the original post that you would eventually switch to a HD Antenna, have you tried that? If that is to be your final destination, why troubleshoot the interim step?

I am hoping someone from Plex development monitors this forum. From my testing I am certain the Plex software is having an issue detecting the clear QAM channels correctly. Here is why I believe this.

  1. Using the WinTV software it runs a channels scan through the Hauppauge WinTV-QuaHD. At the end of the scan the WinTV software detects 50+ clear QAM channels TV channels being broadcast by WaveBroadband. IE: NONE of the channels are protected or encrypted AND I do not have a cable card.
  2. Running a channels search using Plex connecting to the SAME Hauppauge WinTV-QuaHD the software detects 50+ channels. At the completion of the scan I then must select a guide. I have chosen the WaveBroadband one and during the next step the PLEX software shows that ALL channels EXCEPT for one are protected. I have also chosen alternative guides, regardless of selection the PLEX software shows all the channels protected.

To me, it is clear that the PLEX software is having the issue, not something I am doing wrong.

I am hoping some technical person with PLEX can help me sort this out.

Update:

I installed an HDTV AIRFREE ($54.99 Amazon) Amplified Digital Antenna on our roof and ran RG-6 Quad Coax down to the Hauppauge QuadHD PCI Express TV Tuner Card. The initial scan picked up 28 OTA channels and Plex loaded the guide just fine. So far so good with OTA channels. I do need to aim a little better to find a missing KING 5 channel but, at least it works.

My next test will be testing a SiliconDust HDHomeRun Connect tuner and seeing if it will allow PLEX to detect the cable companies clear QAM channels. I will update the post once I have completed the test.

Don’t think the Connect will, tried it at my house. My Prime is picking up the cable company local channels without a cablecard.

This is the exact same issue I have on the HVR-2250 as well, which is a “supported” card (and I use that term loosely). Clear QAM channels that are not protected/encrypted are marked as protected after the scan. This is on Windows, Linux, with WinTV installed, without, and turned upside down on a bun with mustard on it. I’ve made sacrifices to all of the gods and none of them seem to be able to make it work either. It’s not you. There are others with the same issue. And no, no one is going to help you.

Same issue here with the Hauppauge quad card. With our without the WinTV app, with different drivers, clean Win 10 installs, nothing works. The channels show up fine in the WinTV app and on my TV as clear QAM (no cablecard) but PLEX marks all but one as protected not matter what configuration I use to run the scan.

Same problem as above - WinTV finds and maps QAM channels correctly, Plex does not. Hoping to find a solution before giving up and paying for something else to get around this.

Still ongoing with me as well using the WinTV quad

I’ve recently installed the WinTV-quadHD card and it had no problems finding all my channels. My only problem is I can only view/record 2 channels at a time on my “quadHD” card. I’m trying to figure out how to use all 4 at one time…

You have to add it twice as the Supported DVR Tuner page states.

:black_medium_small_square:WinTV-quadHD: This device will show up as two dual-tuner devices. You can simply add it as two devices to a single Plex DVR to make use of all four tuners.
