Plex Episode Filename Matching No Longer Working

Server Version#: 1.31.0.6654
NA

Did something change within the last few months in a new server build with regards to how PLEX matches episode filenames with their metadata?

For over 5 years, I have gone against the standard file naming convention for episodes. I’ll give an example. Take the show Star Trek: Picard for instance. With seasons 1 & 2 from a few years ago, my file naming convention has always been like this, and PLEX matched them with no issues.

D:\Videos\TV\Star Trek - Picard\Season 1\101 - Remembrance.mkv
D:\Videos\TV\Star Trek - Picard\Season 2\201 - The Star Gazer.mkv

Now, season 3 has started and I went to name the first episode filename as I always have before:

D:\Videos\TV\Star Trek - Picard\Season 3\301 - The Next Generation.mkv

However, now this time, PLEX refuses to match the file to the proper episode name and it gets applied a generic name of “Episode 301” with no metadata.

The only way I can get it to match is if I give it the proper name:

D:\Videos\TV\Star Trek - Picard\Season 3\S03E01 - The Next Generation.mkv

So, I’m wondering what has changed here? Why did PLEX suddenly decide it can’t match the filenames in the fashion I did before anymore? PLEX still has all of my previous episodes with the old naming style matched, its just anything new, regardless of the show, that it refuses to match if not in the S##E## filename style.

Yes, the SEE naming convention is not supported anymore. It was never documented as being supported and is just an ambiguous naming scheme which was interfering with supporting legitimate 3 digit episode numbers.

You can read the release notes below. You can continue using these filenames but you will have to use a .plexmatch file going forward: https://support.plex.tv/articles/plexmatch/

Well, that explains it! Thanks.
