Having a problem with playback of 4K video that I cannot figure out. My Plex Media Server is a standalone computer running Windows 10. Have several NVidia Shield clients, most connected to HDTVs (not 4K). For purposes of troubleshooting, I will discuss 2 of them. Player 1 is an NVidia Shield is running the newest Plex App version (8.10.0.21911). When I open a 4K video, the picture stutters and pauses every few seconds because the Media Server insists on transcoding both video and audio and there is not enough CPU to accomplish the task. This is new behavior following updates -previously I could play the same file smoothly (not sure which update caused the problem). Player 2 is also NVidia Shield and exhibited exactly same behavior as Player 1 until I used the option “Remove all updates” from the Plex App, which restored it to Version 5.6.1.505. Now Player 2 plays 4K video smoothly, and my Server Dashboard shows that it is direct streaming video and transcoding audio only.
Is this a bug in the new Plex App, or am I missing a setting? Logs attached. These reflect attempts at playing 2 separate 4K movies (Aquaman, Escape Plan) on Player 1, followed by playing same files on Player 2. I am complete novice reviewing, but I do see that the log states that Direct Play is turned off on Player 1. Not sure if this is the problem, but I see no option to turn on Direct Play in Plex on this player (there is an option for this on the old version of the Plex App on Player 2).
Any help greatly appreciated. I love Plex, and would like to use latest versions of the client Apps!
