Plex falls offline often

Plex keeps falling offline often. I’m so tired of troubleshooting why but I can’t narrow it down. I thought it was the P2000 with video transcoding enabled but even with it off it still does it. I purchased “always up” and run PMS as a service and that doesn’t fix it either. Might have been more common once I did my re-install of Plex with Windows 10 but not sure.

I think I want to re-install Plex. Is there a way to un-install and re-install Plex to create a fresh installation, using the same server name, so that I DON’T have to instruct 25 friends and family on how to re-accept the invite? The invite process is such a pain in the ass how it works right now. It’s not just “click an activation link” and it works, ever. You have to jump through hoops - click the activation several times, log in and out of Plex.tv, find notifications, tell them to click green check boxes, then stop using the browser and go back to app — it is not at all seamless.

Overall looking for the easiest way for my friends and family to remain connected after I reload Plex, assuming I’m not formatting the computer…

Yes, save and restore the information in the Advanced server settings.

But I very much doubt reinstallung the server will help you with the remote connectivity issues.

Would that restore method also work if i do that after a format and OS reinstall? Obv it will still have to regrab the metadata, i just dont want my users to have to do anything

Yes. It’ll also work then. Just make sure to shut down Plex server before restoring those settings.

Last question.

Im going from Windows 10 back to Windows 8 which seemed to always work better. That wont affect the restore right?

Windows version doesn’t matter much. But I don’t think it is a wise decision to go back. Windows 8 will be ‘unsupported’ by Microsoft pretty soon and Windows 10 has been working much better overall than 8 for me.

Maybe I’ll try a different version Windows 10 but mainly just for the clean install. I’m using build 17134 currently. I just cant find out why Plex drops out so much lately. i7 4770 CPU, 32 gigs memory, fiber internet each way.

Figured maybe a clean install was the way to go but I did just do that not too long ago - changing from Win8 to Win10. I gave up on hardware transcoding as that seemed to cause lots of issues (perfectly defined by this issue request : [BUG] Hardware transcoding causes PMS to become unresponsive ) so now I have a useless $450 Quadro P2000. But users keep reporting “plex offline?” and stuff there watching stops and they have to restart it - and it seems to happen nightly.

Any specific registry file I’m supposed to copy via regedit?
