Plex Files Unavailable but they’re not missing

I’m new to the Mac side of things (been running a Windows Plex server for ages) and have been running into this problem on my new Mac Studio. One question abut the solution..

I can’t seem to find the “/etc/” directory. (To be honest, there are a few directories that still seem to be ‘hidden’ in Finder.

Buying Automount is easy. But I’d like to use the nsmd.conf file once I know how to get to where I should put it. Thanks..

If you’re looking for it in Finder, you’ll only see it if you enable hidden files. You can do so by pressing (together) Shift + Command + Period. It’ll be on your root drive.

Or, from the Terminal, cd /etc.

you have to access it via terminal.
-Go to Launchpad > search Terminal, then open it
-sudo nano /etc/nsmb.conf
-Paste this in there,
[default]
signing_required=no
streams=yes
notify_off=yes
port445=no_netbios
protocol_vers_map=4
soft=yes
dir_cache_off=yes
dir_cache_max_cnt=0
mc_prefer_wired=yes
mc_on=no

-Save and Exit, then reboot MAc.

I have removed my NFS mounting solution in lieu of this because PlexDVR is severely broken using NFS. I have done the nsmb.conf file and have AutoMounter running. Everything is holding the line so far. However, 2 questions on this…

  1. Is there something that AutoMounter does to mount the SMB shares that a script doesn’t do… or simply placing an SMB share into the Login Items?

  2. AutoMounter mounts the shares after about 1 minute, well after my application startup automation app (PMS, Sonarr, Radarr, Bazarr, Tautulli, Sabnzbd) has completed. Can I get this thing to mount them first before that runs? Or do I turn the automator app into a script and have it run after the shares have been mounted?

I’m having a similar issue with my movie library becoming unavailable and/or missing movies. Would you mind looking at my logs?

Are you on a MacOS?

Yes, I am. OSX 15.5

Add me to the this just happened to be pile.

Running M4 Mac Mini latest OS and latest PMS

3 posts were split to a new topic: TV Library missing on iOS

I’m having almost the exact identical issue; M1 Macbook air running MacOS 15.6.1, and my media shares from my synology NAS via SMB kept disconnecting, so I’m using a third party program called automounter to keep them mounted, but even with that running, I can’t do regular library scans because any time I do it tells me my items are gone even though they are still showing up in finder just fine… And sometimes when I add an item to Radarr, Plex doesn’t seem to get the notification from Radarr so the movie doesn’t get added unless I perform a scan, and then half the time it breaks and requires me to remove and re-add the share even though it’s still mounted to the exact same path.

This is driving me insane, and as a plex pass holder, really disappointing. I’ve never had to do so much maintenance to keep a server running than right now.

The problem lies with Apple’s SMB implementation, not with Plex.

You can edit the nsmb.conf file on your Mac to alleviate the situation.

For anyone using Automounter, do you know how to mount a specific folder?

Still hoping someday we will have some way to directly login to the server similar to how Emby does it, but for now…here we are.

Good news!

I have installed MacOS Tahoe, and all SMB issues are gone! Empty /etc/nsmb.conf, no configurations in the file. It is working fine, stable, no issues. Multiple read and write operations, no disconnections.

It seems that Apple solved the issue in MacOS 26.

Thank you for being the guinea pig. I was too nervous to be the one to test it! Does that mean you dont need to use Automounter anymore?

Since Sonoma, I’ve been using Automounter to keep the drives always available. What I’ve noticed with Tahoe is that I can read and write to the drives without crashing the Finder, without disconnecting the drives, and without any special configuration. Just like it worked before Sequoia.

@plcn_1 thanks for testing this out and providing your feedback. I was going to update anyway, since we had the workaround and they couldn’t POSSIBLY make it worse. But sharing your experience made me pull the trigger and I’m updating now.

That is good news, I’m moving here this week so not making any large changes to my system, but that does make it easier to purchase when the M5 is released.

I don’t mind using auto mounter but that smb fix will be greatly appreciated if it lasts.

@Anqui3tas… agreed. I love automounter and used it long before the issue we saw. the auto remount feature alone is worth keeping. You never know when an SMB connection will drop.

It’s up to y’all if you want to call the next MacOS update the solution. Obviously if you want to wait to get more of a consensus from the thread who eventually update. :crossed_fingers: this can be put behind us. I hope not too many people get stuck on any affected MacOS versions.

Dont think the new Mac OS solved the problem. It improved, but not solved. My movies folder gets resetted to about 1050 movies after every scan. it has more than 2500 entries.
This was observed with Automounter but without nsmb.conf.
