Plex Fireside in the Forum 2024

agree a photos feature would be nice, currently using Synology Photos on my Shield perhaps something similar built-in to Plex.

@BanzaiInstitute @anon5074910 said it better than I did/explained it better than I did. I use the radio’s primarily and playlists secondary. I have playlists and I have tagged and I have tried all kinds of different things. I have made it work for me and am very happy with everything.

I was wishful thinking it would be a unique and specialized feature and really nice to have the ability to tailor the radio stations. Reading through this fireside, it is clear, there are far more important things to take care of and develop. We already have mix builder and it works really well, we do have playlists and smart playlists that work really well. There are many many things that are awesome and do so many things.

What I am thinking of is more in the weeds and details, something that would be unique and add another level of control to the user and make the user experience more custom. As always keep up the good work and thank you for allowing us to openly chat on all things.

Thank you so much for the reply.

Looking forward to seeing it. I would gladly test this out on my library and help out in anyway I can. Thank you for the update.

Yes, Yes to this. It would be a good first step/start. If this is something that can be done, I will gladly test it. Speaking of Tidal. That one is a hard punch to the gut. So many hours and effort to get it working, truly sorry to hear this is ending. If there is anything I have noticed over the years, Plex always seems to find a way to move onwards and forwards, and you all will do that again. I can hardly wait to see what interesting and unique things come next.

This is good to know. I have several albums I am going to devote some time to getting that data up there.

Appreciate your time and effort.

  1. Any update on audio book integration? The last time someone talked about it was during the last fireside chat as I recall.

  2. Any chance of letting us alias user names?

  3. Can we have the ability of removing people from the play history? I’ve got friends who haven’t had access for years but their names keep showing up.

Hi guys,

couldn’t you expand the actor search to include all film categories in the library?

If I scroll down on the Shield, it shows the actors. If I select one, Plex shows me where else he has appeared in my library, but only in the same category. So if I’m in the Action category, Plex doesn’t show me that the actor has also appeared in a film in the Children’s category, for example.

Wouldn’t that be a feature that could be added?

An observation:

2 days in, almost 150 posts and generally speaking from what I can see the community interacting on this fireside seem focused on local content, client playback or UX design. I don’t think there has been a single comment on the plex profiles, social and sharing activity features https://support.plex.tv/articles/profile.

I do hope plex hear this feedback and where the community want them to focus their development efforts.

Another one here:

  • What about an option to connect to some P2P sources (magents/torrents) and, according to some rules, allow the user to gather some content and even play it ‘directly’ without even waiting for the full download (a-la-popcorn).
  • Or at least recover the plugins system, so anybody outside Plex could tackle this.
  • Emulators/games?

Thanks for the detailed response. It confirms what I suspected, and unfortunately as you noted yourself this isn’t an easy problem to solve.

It’s also not that we don’t want to list very single dub for every single language of a movie, but more that the metadata simply isn’t there today. It’s definitely something we continuously keep an eye out for as we augment our own metadata provider, either via additional sources or updates to existing ones. But not something we can do much about for now.

Thanks again for the followup

Out of curiosity, what’s missing in HTPC that makes Plex Kodi Connect a better experience?

Ah, I understand now, when you say “show” you’re referring to individual episodes not an entire series!

What client and use case are you trying to do this on? Because the context menu for episodes in the web app has a Delete action immediately available for episodes.

Regarding deletion after a re-watch, it’s an interesting use case. I believe we intentionally don’t delete when an episode gets re-added, but I’m going to bring this up with the team on our next meeting to discuss the reasoning behind the choice and see what we can do about it.

Hi. I’m one of the people affected by the media server icon disappearing on the Nvidia shield pro. The device is effevtuvely useless for the purpose fkr which I bought it. Do you have any plans to establish a real time support option for people who are having ongoing issues that articles can’t seem to solve?

Yes, sorry for using the wrong wording. I am using a Apple TV 4K 3rd Generation. I would love to see the Delete action immediately available everywhere.

I understand the re-watch and re-record is complex, so thanks for reviewing it with the team. I’ve pondered it as well, and do like when you re-record an episode of a series it is marked as watched, so you don’t lose track if it is a newer series.

And what about being able to choose at least some of the sources? See this feature request: [Feature Request] Ability to specify Metadata from a single source (IMDB, TMDB or TVDB)

Release year and genres being the most important thing imo, because the year can be incorrectly reported from IMDb currently and the genres doesn’t mix well.

This would take some load off you at Plex because the user can pick what they like. There are already some such options already available, such as where the critic ratings comes from.

This sounds interesting but also somewhat frightening at the same time! Please don´t screw it up - Plex HTPC is awesome, but would only need some polishing on some edges. For example “smoother” scrolling/navigating and fewer UI bugs…

Although it was said “No details” just yet, may I still ask if it uses mpv and has proper HDR passthrough? (= like now)

Ps: Thank you Plex for making such a great product!

This is a great idea, with an additional note of such a large userbase, many of us would volunteer as beta testers for proposed fixes that affects our hardware.

Always figured the general reaction by most people was either indifference or rejection.
I’d put myself in preferring any “social media” pushes to being gutted or at least having an option to completely disable it. No tabs for it. No details about it. Nothing. We can’t even delete reports that were made on any content.

I don’t mind the “Discover” section, but the rest of the social media push and its profiles are things I’d rather be gone or fully toggleable.

Even if we got nfo support that would be amazing. Then we could use something like scripts/nfo.groovy at master · filebot/scripts · GitHub to create our own nfo files giving us control over the metadata.

Titles, summaries, year and genre are a major pet hate for me in plex with the modern agent. The more is better approach is not correct, especially for genre. Some movies have up to 10 genres assigned which makes the whole thing useless …

EDIT: to hammer home the point (11 genres)

I appreciate the sentiment here, and as someone that has participated in both Fireside chats @dokuro we do recognize and thank you for being a part of this community. The fact is, the people here in the forums represent a smaller yet important part of our user base. One that we are going to continue to work hard to continue growing and building things for because a lot of us here at Plex would count ourselves among this group.

However, we have been very clear that we intent to continue working on building a global community for streaming content where people can easily discovery, experience, and share what matters to them. These aren’t just my words, they are clearly stated as our mission on our main site. Last year we reported over 16 million active monthly users, and that number has only grown since then. This Fireside has 81 participants so far (at the time of my writing this post) as we are loving hearing your comments, issues, and thanks. We value these comments, but have tried to be open about our intentions and direction, while also continuing to build on what we believe is a premier, self-hosted server experience as part of that mission.

We know that we aren’t going to be able to make everyone happy. That ship probably sailed ~15,999,997+ users ago  But we aren’t going to stop working to build amazing experiences for all of our users!

Thanks @plxstrm This is a good idea and one we have already started talking about a little bit. Nothing currently in the works here, but we appreciate the feedback and the idea!
