Plex for Android doesn't work while using a secure connection [An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again]

Server Version#:1.18.6.2350
Player Version#: 8.20.1.26670

I have been experiencing it for a while. It is unimaginable to me that only when using a secure setting the android devices stop working and the other way around the web, windows app and iOS stop working when NOT using a secure connection. I know plex is aware of the issue, but they been that for a year now. How about doing a mandatory fix for this. It has to do something with the coding I assume… I can’t think of another way.

I been trying said fixes but nothing works, other than disabling the secure connection… which previously worked… I waited on purpose to subscribe to plex pass… reason being I had to be sure it was a reliable service…

If anyone can help, I’d appreciate it… It’s only on the android devices.

If you are seeing the “check your connection” error message:

There is a problem with the current Android client and older versions of Plex Media Server (1.18, 1.19, maybe others).

The problem is visible in the Android client log: [FFmpeg] [ERROR] [tls @ 0xc35efba0] Peer certificate failed verification

Updating to the current release of Plex Media Server fixes the problem.

If you cannot update to the current release, the workaround is to disable secure communications on the Plex Media Server and the client.

Plex Media Server: Settings → Network → Secure Connections = Disabled.
Plex Android app: Settings → Advanced → Allow Insecure Connections = Always

Notes:

  • You will lose Plex Media Server access via app.plex.tv, which uses https, when you disable secure communications. You can connect to your Plex server via http://pms_ip_address:32400/web (ex: http://192.168.1.2:32400/web).
  • Plex Relay will not be available, as it requires secure communication.
  • You may have to reconfigure other Plex clients to allow insecure connections.

Tried and no luck, still the same error

Yep, I have the same problem. About a week ago, Android app simply will not play anything. Using fine for over a year and then, suddenly, nothing will play. Almost overnight. I changed nothing on my app nor my phone nor my network. Nothing. Getting same error. Have set to all array of connections (secure on same network, always, never, but makes no difference - still no good). Have had to ditch the app altogether and use the web interface. Surely there is some solution to this? I am running Android 11. Help, please! Love Plex, and used to love the Android app…

After today’s android update I get this in videos with EAC3 audio

Fixed for me today
“An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again”

I had the this error on both my phone and Nvidia Shield TV for the first time today.
I did notice that both devices had auto-updated today to client app version 8.25.0.28473 beta

I tried uninstalling, reinstalling on both devices (as well as many other suggestions) but still received the error on both devices.

I left the Plex beta program and then waited for that to take effect, then installed the public version 8.24.0.28408 that was available on the phone and Nvidia Shield TV.

There was no more error on either device. So in my case it seems pretty clearly to have been an issue specifically with the 8.25.0.28473 beta version released on Oct 15th.

I mention this in this thread because blueboybob also had the problem crop up today. If you’re in the Plex beta program, try leaving that and re-installing or downgrading to an earlier client app by some other means.

Same. Leaving the 10/15 beta fixed the issue
