Previously, Plex worked perfectly on Apple TV, streaming all episodes smoothly.
Now, most episodes freeze on a single frame when played, even though some randomly work temporarily before breaking again.
The files themselves are fine (playable on other devices), and there’s no overheating or corruption.
The network is stable (1 Gbps Ethernet), and app reinstallation didn’t help.
No changes were made to settings, yet the issue persists across multiple devices.
Also, if I select the Playback Settings to “Convert Automatically” instead of “Play Original Quality”, it plays the video, and in “Technical Details” it says: - Player: AVPLayer, The Enhaced Video Play cannot be used when Automatically Adjust Quality is enabled - and Transcode Reason: - App cannot ditect play this item. Direct play is disabled - ((which is false!! I’ve never disabled anything of those parameters, and they’re ON, they have been always ON…))
I didn’t change anything, this happened from one day to other. This is absurd, IDK why it’s happening on the Apple TV. I can not find a solution. I’ve resintallled, moving folders, restarting computer, router etc etc…
I’m having very similar problems, since the AppleTV updated Plex to the latest version.
Plenty of crashing problems like you, Original quality doesn’t work, but complains that Auto Adjust is wrong. Anime subs (specifically any signs and other on-screen elements, as opposed to speaking subs) keep crashing the player, skipping forward or back stutters and sometimes crashes the player, intermittent dropped frames and glitches in playback… the whole nine yards.
My AppleTV has basically become useless at playing anime, and annoying as all get out for anything else.
I wish I knew how to make AppleTV downgrade to the last version, but I just don’t.
Just to clarify, have you tried turning “Auto Adjust Quality” in the Plex app settings (in the Video Quality section) off to see if that improves things? As the playback details indicate, the enhanced video player can’t be used with “Auto Adjust Quality” is enabled. If it’s enabled, it forces Plex to fall back to the default Apple player which can be problematic.
Changing the settings TO Auto Adjust Quality is what allows those files to play at all. Having it off and playing Original Quality crashes the player immediately upon any signs subtitle in anime, for example.
It has been always off, also direct play on. I even reset (reinstall) my Apple TV and Plex worked again normally but super shortly, like one chapter.
Plex it’s right now, for me, buggy. When I installed it for the first time about one month ago, it worked everyday without problem, with the default settings (that I never touched). But from one day to another, it just can’t direct play. It won’t advance, it stucks in the first frame and gets freezed.
And like I said in the last point, I have to ‘convert automatically’ (which I don’t like, because it shouldn’t be necessary), and spits false information, because “Automatically Adjust Quality” has been always off and Direct play has been always enabled.
