Plex for Roku Opus audio sounds choppy/warbly

I have video in HEVC that has OPUS 5.1 audio that the Roku client attempts to direct play which results in choppy weird audio. If I disable direct stream the issue is resolved once the audio is transcoded. Any tips to fix this without having to disable direct play every time for this content?

Can I ask the source for this? Anime? It seems like that’s the origin of most “technically better but harder to play” files.

I have a whole TV series’s encoded this way. It’s not anime though.

I only have issues with my Roku clients that are setup for more than 2 channel audio.

A Roku will transcode it down to 2 channels when it’s only stereo and it plays fine. A Roku will with 5.1 available will try to direct play the audio and garble it all up.

The problem I have is the same problem the other person reported in that locked thread.

Wow, this is … unexpected … I was searching for Roku and Opus and 5.1. Opus 5.1 isn’t listed on the Roku documented codecs page, but there’s a hit over in E__y-ville.

It took me a moment to understand that “P _ _ X” on the E m by forum was Plex. So I’ll break this link to avoid drawing any attention. I feel silly doing it. I didn’t know there was that kind of animosity. What a shame.

I’m guessing (?) that Plex is the newer type of Roku app, and that Opus 5.1 might not actually be supported by the Roku.

If that’s the case, it means that Plex shouldn’t be offering Opus 5.1 to the Roku.

So that might be something Plex can improve.

Or you can change the setting when watching.

Or you could ADD a transcoded AC3 5.1 audio stream to your files.

I used to have to do that on the TiVo profile. It had to be applied at every update, it annoyed me.

How do I officially report this to Plex?
