Plex for Windows Live TV stops after 5 mins

Live TV from my HDHomeRun works fine on my iOS devices and on Apple TV, but on Plex for Mac it stops after 2-3 minutes. If I start the stream manually again it will continue playing, but stop again after a short while. Streaming directly from the HDHomeRun to VLC or mpv on the same machine works fine.

I have been silently watching this and similar threads for the past 2 months waiting for some kind of indication that this is being worked on. I have become extremely frustrated with the lack of support from Plex on this issue. I honestly wonder if any of the developers even use the Live TV services. Having this issue for as long as we have with little support is downright shameful.

Like others: Live TV will freeze after about 5 minutes on most channels on any Android TV device while using the new player. I can switch to the old player, but then movies will crash. I do have some channels that will work, but in some cases I end up with the Spanish language stream in this case, even when I have English selected.

Happy to provide logs if and when I feel it is worth it and Plex support shows some actual indication of working on this issue.

I really regret the lifetime pass at this point as Live TV was my main reason for purchasing. Regardless, at some point this gets fixed or I just stop using Plex all together, including any of the commercial streaming services.

Well, mine has been working now for the past few days. Only change I made was to uninstall and reinstall the Android app.

Seeing this problem now on Fire TV with 1.20.4.3517 updated today. Also feeling regretful of pass subscription.

@mvheath: In your FireTV Plex settings, turn off the “new video player”. Fire sticks have had an issue with freezing Live TV for a long time.

interesting, it’s been fine til now… Will give it a go…

Edit: nope, still bombs out after a few mins

@mvheath yep. Same here now. Bye bye fire stick, here comes Apple TV lol.

No way… Never going back to that ecosystem… Took me years to get out of it.

I’ve been banging my head against a wall for weeks trying to figure out a solution to live tv freezing but only in the web player in windows. I just stumbled across this thread and wanted to mention all of the troubleshooting steps I’ve tried.

Started out with a HDHomeRun Duo added to Plex, several versions and now 1.20.4.3517 on win10. I can stream it ok on a win10 machine on LAN, but no windows 10 machines remotely. Not a bandwidth issue, I have 45mbps up and trying to use a 4mbps stream. Streaming works fine to roku devices, android, iphone, and samsung smart tv apps all via WAN. Streaming fails to windows 10 machines over WAN in chrome, firefox, edge, and plex windows app. By “fails” I mean that live TV plays for about 5-7 min and then craps out. I can always tell it’s going to happen because in the plex dashboard (and dash android app) it shows live tv recording but shows nobody playing.

I bought a HD HomeRun Extend (newer metal case model) off ebay, to try the pre-transcoding on the device with various profiles (mobile, heavy). Same problem.

Tried both tuners on Plex server 1.20.4.3517 on Synology NAS instead of windows, same issue.

Had a remote home user try connecting to the plex server (https://ip address:32400) directly and same issue.

Had a remote home user try connecting to my LAN over VPN and access the plex server using the same method above but via LAN IP since they are on VPN, same issue.

Same user who has tried all this exhaustive troubleshooting fires up their roku and it works perfectly. Even at 10mbps on the original tuner that doesn’t pre-transcode.

Surely there has to be a better solution than taking a roku with me whenever I travel? Movies and Shows all stream perfectly fine, its only live tv that has this issue.

Still working fine for me at this point, at least with Android on the Tivo 4K. Also installed on a new Chromecast with Google TV and running without issue. Running version 8.8.1.21332.

Just upgraded to combination of
Ubuntu plexmediaserver_1.20.4.3517-ab5e1197c_amd64.deb
Windows 10 Client Version 1.23.0.1435-e10e14cf

So far 20 minutes of watching without stopping. Will let it go for another hour to be sure. Previously, it would stop within 5 minutes.

Took a bit to find the Plex Windows Client Changelog:

So I’ve been doing a bunch of troubleshooting over the last week, one of my windows PCs on my home network can stream back fine in chrome and the other craps out. Imagine my surprise when I realize it only craps out when I’m not streaming as the home user that is the admin of the Plex server…

Also it’s not necessary to let the stream run for 5 to 7 minutes to see if it craps out, you’ll know immediately after starting it if it’s hosed because the dashboard will show a recording activity but won’t show anybody streaming the channel in question.

It would be great if some other individuals experiencing this issue could see up switching to the admin user fixes streaming for them as well. As I mentioned in a previous post, other devices like Android’s iPhones roku’s and TV apps have no trouble streaming as other home users, it only seems to be the web client bombing out if you’re not the admin user (at least for me).

“the stream run for 5 to 7 minutes and craps out”… on a new firestick has same problem:(
(File removed)
dev’s dont seem to care first post was on Sep 22 not a peep out of them…
thats the only reason i have a plex pass i guess i’ll cancel it and try something else…

Seeing the issue here too on Fire Stick. Happens constantly and incredibly annoying.

Has anyone of you put something into the server preference
Settings - Server - Network - ‘Show Advanced’ - “Terminate Sessions Paused for Longer Than”
?
And if so, does something change if you extend this number or remove it altogether?

I’m having this issue running the Plex app ( Version 1.24.0.1483-714cba36) on Mac OS (Catalina v10.15.7) connected to the HDHomerun HDHR5-4US tuner. I’ll start watching a channel, and, after a few minutes, I get dropped back into the guide screen.

Have the same issue on FireTV Stick 4k on the latest Player version.
Latest Windows Plex app doesnt have issues.

Edit: Nevermind. Plex apps takes just longer to quit the live session

I’ve posted the fix and work-around for the fire TV issues here: PLex app very unstable running in the Amazon Firestick

This issue is resolved for me.
