Plex For Windows, no remote control?

Server Version#: latest
Player Version#: latest

Hello guys,

I have Plex Media player on my windows PC and recently while starting it, a pop up appeared that i shuld use the new Plex for Windows. I was confused at the beginning like others as well, so i installed it.
I also use my iphone and my android table to remotely control the Plex Media Player while laying in the bed/couch/whatever, by pressing the upper right “cast” button on my phone and choosing from there the player.

Problem:
With the new Plex for Windows software, the remote controlling is not possible; i cannot find the player in my phone’s “cast” button in the upper right corner. Are there any special configurations needed on this new software is it just incapable of this remote controlling feature?

P.S. - this is not a firewalling problem, or a subnet problem or whatever other checks/problems. I have tshooted it and it strictly resumes to the new Plex For Windows.
Thanks

So keep using Plex Media Player - like the rest of us.

You’re right, however - the ‘Mirror’ function works, but not the ‘Remote’ function, but really, PfW(hatever) is designed for the Desktop and as a full replacement for PMP, because Internal Logistics reveals there isn’t any need for PMP any longe… wait… wait… (static/angry villagers/static/distant explosions/cows mooing):

“…this is Charlie Pigeon on the scene in a little part of the internet that was today the setting for all out war…”

It seems PMP will be around for a while.
If Plex is serious about it’s replacement, they’d better develop a replacement.

It seems PMP will be around for a while. → ah really? good then. i had the impression it will die soon. I will stick with it then, but sounds strange for Plex team to remove (or not add) important features like the “remote” function, to new releases. Real strange.

Thx.

I just tested Plex for Windows. Remote control does work with my Android phone.
However, there is a bug currently in the Android app (7.30) which will be fixed in v7.31 (currently in beta)

And in the settings of Plex for Windows under
Settings - Plex for Windows - General - ‘Show Advanced’
the checkbox “Advertise as player” needs to be “ticked”.

I also recommend to disable power saving in the properties of the network adapter. On all Windows machines which are used as either server or player.

thx for reply

I also recommend to disable power saving in the properties of the network adapter----> just tried that: no difference.

I did the tests from a Android tablet and from an iphone. I also tried with PMP and PfW installed on three different computers (win 7 and win 10).
For me the remote does not work for PfW in neither of the cases described.

Thx

Do you have a running plex server in your local network or are you remote from the server?

Are both plex clients in the same local network?
(e.g. if you use a ‘guest WiFi’ for the mobiel app, but the windows machine is connected per wire, the both devices are technically not in the same network)

Nor does mine - on 7.3.0

All defining criteria met - don’t work - LG 501V somethingorother phone

…but hey, we’re lucky in that we can still use PMP on the TV (where it opens at my house), and use PfW(hatever) on the desktop with a mouse and/or keyboard - while we wait for 7.whatever for our phones.

Crisis averted.

“Do you have a running plex server in your local network or are you remote from the server?”
No, the server and the clients are in separate networks.

Plex server is runing on an Ubuntu server machine in subnet A.
All the players (the three computers i mentioned) and the Android tablet and the iphone, are all in subnet B.

Then some client types won’t be able to use the Plex Companion protocol.
I strongly suggest to put both server and clients into the same subnet.

Here, there is but one and everyone is on it.

this is a limitation. it is not normal. why should i have to put the servers and clients on the same subnet? For security reasons, i like to separate machines with different functions inside my network.

Then some client types won’t be able to use the Plex Companion protocol. --> until now, with PMP this was not an issue. I am running it with clients even through VPN tunnels. Now all of these will be impossible? I really don’t see it as an improovement or “feature”.

With PMP there is no issue. But didn’t you recently switch from PMP to Plex for Windows?

Yes, exactly. This is what this topic is about: PMP which will be deprecated at a certain point (at least this is what i know) has this feature, while the newly released Plex for Windows does not have this feature.

PMP will be kept running, though it might not get new features from some point on.

I’ve been trying to use the remote control function all night with PMP - keeps crashing the android phone app - latest version for both.

On the bright side, @OttoKerner
Remember that distorted audio when playing music on the phone app?
All clear - just in time for remote control crashing…lol

Is your Android app on version 7.31 yet?

Not yet - still 7.30.2

Then wait for this version. I mentioned it above that your current version has a known bug around Companion.
