Plex and Roku issues (and others)

I’ve uploaded some media to the server and am having varying success viewing it.
First off. I am using a Windows 10 machine. I’ve downloaded the latest Plex desktop app and everything plays fine on it.

Next I tried the web-app. I double-click on the plex icon on my taskbar (the web app) and some of the videos play, but most don’t. I did some digging, and it seems that the ones that do play have the H.264 codec, and the ones that don’t play have the the MPEG4 codec. I’ve also found this issue with my Roku device (some play - most don’t). Any idea how to fix this

I also noticed that the plex web app gives me access to the crackle movies and the music that is stored on my hard drive. The desktop app does not give the option for them?

Plex Web is limited due to web browser restrictions. H.264 video and AAC audio should direct play in most cases.

Media with other video / audio codecs should play, but your Plex Media Server will transcode them to a supported format (aforementioned H.264/AAC).

You can monitor playback using the Plex Dashboard. It will show you if the media is direct playing or transcoding.

Bring up the Plex Dashboard in Plex Web, then play one of the MPEG4 videos in another browser window or on the Roku. It should show if Plex is trying to transcode the video.

and in almost every single case - don’t use Plexweb for playing media.

Use one of the dedicated Player Apps, that will, indeed Direct Play most everything you throw at 'em.

Thanks for getting back to me. I guess I’ll have to use plexweb to watch crackle movies and the desktop plex for everything else. Does anyone know how to get Roku to work. It used to work, but my hard drive died and I had to migrate my movies and TV shows to a new device. Now when I try them on my roku, they show up in my library, but when I play the I get a playback error after 33% is loaded.

Since nobody seems to know how to get the files to play on my Roku. I have started the tedious task of re-encoding (to h264) each file in my massive library.

Just got around to downloading and installing the Plex Media Player. It doesn’t work either, so the only one I have no trouble with is the Plex app. The media server works in some cases, but the Media Player doesn’t work at all (just a continually spinning circle in the middle of the screen)

About halfway there. videos still don’t play on the server.
