I think this would be a pretty natural progression to have a PLEX app on Samsung Gear VR.
Imagine watching your favorite movies on a huge virtual screen while the sound is output through your surround sound receiver via chromecast. Also the ability to sync others' Gear VR video output so more than one person can watch the movie at the same time.
Naturally this will be the way to go in the near future. But since it will only support select few devices. I think something like Oculus Rift need to be released (and widely available) for Plex team to be even interested in implementing support for it.
PS. Do you have Gear VR? I hear that even with 1440p display, PPI is still low that wearer can see pixels during use.

I have one under my tree. I've heard the same but after a while you don't notice it. I'll report back on Christmas.
Very very cool. I think this is a nice proof of concept. The possibilities for this are endless.
Personally I think it would be better to make it for the Gear VR first. Because the hardware is standardized the experience will be guaranteed. As opposed to the OR in which everyone would have different hardware and I hear its difficult to get it dialed in.
This is by far the best experience I’ve seen. I don’t have GearVR and I don’t really plan on getting one anytime soon due to the limitations to Samsung devices. I have a cardboardesque holder right now that works great but there is no way to navigate with it unless I were to get the remote, which I can easily get and I think the experience would be the same.
I don’t see this as being a Plex driven platform but a 3rd party add-on. I think Plex would be able to lead the experience but I don’t think there are enough users out there to justify the additional resources to create and support this. However I am not a Plex employee I do have product management experience and this would not be a small undertaking.
I’ve expressed my concerns of a full 3D immersive experience in the other post linked above, along with some other 3D options and where battery power becomes a big issue. I don’t mind selecting my movie through the normal app and then putting the phone into my holder, whatever it is, and then just watching a movie in 3D (or even 2D privately with the screen split accordingly). The immersive experience is very cool but I just want to watch a movie.
