I appreciate the help, but at this point, I’m planning to migrate my users off Plex beginning in Q1 of next year. I’d rather spin up my own authentication gateway (just completed last week) and get OIDC working with Jellyfin than put up with this.
Can we please stay on topic (Roku preview) and be constructive?
The Plex staff are being responsive here, and we should be respectful.
I’m all about pointing out issues constructively and not slinging emotional mud. I’m also all for praising what is good. This Roku preview UI is quite good and so far what isn’t is being discussed internally or is being fixed.
Been thinking about this more. Would it be helpful if there was a way to select a scroll bar or numbered menu to speed up scrolling. Something like an A-Z scroll bar that is horizontal (but this would be labeled 1-number of episodes)? It could be positioned below the episode posters.
Or, perhaps multiple presses of the fast forward or rewind buttons would control scroll speed, similar to scanning through a playback
Heyo! Catching up on the posts from over the weekend.
Thank you @Insomnic_1 and @Kilgry for your notes on feedback. I’ve documented a lot of it down for continued observance and tracking. To call out specifically using the FF/RW to skip from one movie preplay (the details screen) to the next, that one is currently being looked at.
@our_conf I hear you about wanting to use the back button to go between levels. Got that too.
And to multiple of y’all talking about issues/suggestions/feedback regarding reordering libraries outside of the current method, that’s also been documented down. ![]()
Also, to set expectations, even outside of this thread, we’re documenting all that we can regarding feedback. What comes next is reviewing and all sorts of behind-the-scenes work that will dictate that moves on, needs further review and investigation, or is punted. I and other hella awesome peeps will do our best to keep things updated as applicable. So. Onwards!
Fantastic!
I’ve been using the Preview version exclusively now because I prefer it.
Unfortunately, had a dang tree take out my Internet and power today. Power is back but waiting on Internet. Do wish Plex would run without (I have multiple authentication users - family in Plex Home). But, I’ll take the UI wins!
Thank you! Big thumbs up! ![]()
Is there a mobile thread like this? I mean one where the mobile team(s) chime in on constructive feedback? I haven’t gotten much traction there.
I would say not on a TV. Mouse and keyboard might be fine, especially with a scroll wheel. When using a remote, you want as few button presses as possible. I think it would be better if the episodes wrapped around and you could see 2.5 or 3.5 rows at a time, with the .5 so you can see if there’s another row or if you’re at the end of the season/series. Same rule would apply to TV seasons. I find that omission of whether there is additional content until I try to scroll down to be especially jarring on the home screen.
I looked at the preview version on Roku. What is that unholy abomination of a double dropdown when selecting the Library menu option? Having one dropdown under that is already a huge step backwards from the left menu we used to have. Now Plex is doubling down on that? Seriously, what is the thought process behind any of this? Is there any?
If you really want to see what they think about that, just see how they’ve only replied to people who already like the UI.
Part of me wonders whether the devs like the new layout . I’ve spent enough time having to build out interfaces for “experts” who “just know what’s best” because of their “gut feeling”. Maybe the devs are being held hostage by an armchair designer or they’re stuck in design-by-committee hell.
Please consider that some people have been using Plex with Roky for years and their eyesight can be challenged by a complete reorder of their experience with the interface.
I’m 39 and my eyesight is being CHALLENGED in all forms of this modern world. From medicine bottles to ad print, the lack of emphasis on ADA compliance, the assumption that everyone can use these services without physical or digital assistance is just
. I am having to bring a small thin pocket magnifying sheet with me to read print on bottles, and to know that the film and TV industry PURPOSEFULLY messes with the audio to increase CAPTION use is absolute asinine. It would be NICE if media corps got their crap together and make it BETTER FOR ALL and customizable instead of having their products and services wall-gardened and proprietary, inaccessible, and not done out of GREED - PLEX included.
Maybe a user selectable switch would have been less impactful.
Additionally a large font option would be helpful since some of us navigate by habit developed over months and years. This change requires repeatedly getting closer to the display to read.
There are several useabilty companies who could help with this level of redesign.
I’ve asked/requested a incremental text increase setting for various UI areas time after time. Nothing has ever been implemented.
I have mom on Emby and she likes how the CoverArt can be INCREASED in size and that’s helped her.
I upgraded my mother’s 55” TCL Roku TV to a Roku branded 65” and she is slightly more capable of seeing these modern UI’s better. It seems these corps are only in on changing the UI to sell more real estate instead of the readability and helpfulness, and it’s more reason for them to emphasize this crappy independence with the use of their craptastic voice AI features. The more they all cannibalize their ecosystems, the more they will be driving away customers, Apple being still the one exception still.
Legitimate question from me, and others feel free to chime in, but in your words and your opinion, what did you like most about having the left side nav over a top navigation? No pressure to answer, but you’re here, I’m here, might as well ask.
I’ve made a note regarding accessibility and font sizes for future investigation! (Also tagging @D_eight6 since you also mentioned it.)
As an Other, I strongly prefer the left menu. It listed out my libraries without resorting to submenus. I could rearrange the order of everything and edit what was and wasn’t present. It wasn’t intrusive and I could have as many items in the list without it taking up additional space. I could hit the back button and be right back at the current menu item. It looks better and feels more intuitive. The new top menu is truncated to the point it feels like things are missing/more difficult to find. The top menu sucks in Netflix and shouldn’t be emulated.
Agreed…the left menu was just so easy to use - it hid itself out of the way but quickly appeared when you went to it. That along with having it be customizable made it perfect.
If anything, they could have made it even more customizable and made the original app even better! For example, allow a person to pin more than a library, maybe a collection, etc.
What these changes mean more than anything is that server admins with libraries are nowhere near their target audience any longer. If they were, they would be doing much more to make it easier for us to access OUR media.
To me it seems admins are creating long lists of libraries when they should instead be creating collections or using labels for access restrictions.
Libraries are folder and content type based, not metadata based.
FYI, the submenus were there, but on the top menu, which my users hardly noticed, nor used. They’d get stuck in Recommended. These new submenus make it more apparent that other views are available.
