PLEX High Memory usage on TS-251+, recent development

I am sitting here watching PLEX eat more and more memory on my QNAP as time ticks by. I stopped and started PLEX on the NAS and initial memory usage was around 200 mb, now it is at 800 mb and climbing. There is no streaming or transcoding going on, just idle, CPU usage ranges from 1 to 5% with an occasional jump into the teens. Running PLEX Version 1.9.7.4460
807 mb now; I’ve never had this problem before and wonder where the memory usage will top out.
Breaking out the processes, the PLEX DLNA server is using over 550 mb of RAM

Do you use DLNA? If not, you can turn it off. Settings - Server - DLNA - Turn off

This will allow first level of diagnosis.

The DLNA server box has been check ever since I started using PLEX and have not seen this issue. Would turning off the feature not affect streaming to iPhones, iPads, Roku, AppleTV, and other such devices?

There is no impact for the Plex app on iOS.

Roku has a classic media player which uses DLNA. If you’re using the Plex Roku app, you do not need DLNA

Thank you for the explanation, can you tell me what playback device would need to have the PLEX DLNA activated? As a short-term fix, yes, I can uncheck the DLNA box but long-term shouldn’t this memory issue be addressed?

The only things I can think of which would need DLNA are those made prior to 2007 timeframe or are first-generation multi-media.

What determines DLNA usage is the client application, not the device. As a rule of thumb, a DLNA application sees a folder structure, the posters, and almost nothing else. Metadata, fanart, extras and other very nice features are accessible by Plex clients only.

Plex client apps do not use DLNA at all. Other apps, such as VLC, can use DLNA or not. And “simple devices” (such as old SmartTV’s, WD TV live, audio amplifiers, old bluray players) only have DLNA.

I have DLNA inactive. A Plex Pass user (like you) has free access to Plex apps such as iOS, Android, tvOS, Roku, etc, therefore has no need to install DLNA apps in these devices (a non plex pass user has the option to either pay the plex app for the device or use DLNA instead).

As you say, deactivate DLNA in PMS and see what happens with your devices. Disabling DLNA in your server can however interfere with remote users whose devices require DLNA (DLNA can be used by remote devices, mainly for music).

Even if DLNA is not used by any device, the DLNA server announces its presence every second or so, and if there are no other apps contending for RAM it may occupy RAM until the operating decides to allocate RAM to another process. Which is not a problem.

if im not using music and photo casting, i can turn off, that what it sounds like. I only view the ‘channels’, not my files.

When you add your media shares, are you referring to them by their proper /share/CACHEDEVx_DATA/share-name reference?
