The home page on all devices for every user now only shows recently added stuff and continue watching. My kids simply don’t use these categories and need to be able to see movies and TV by different criteria. They have stopped using plex almost entirely now and use mostly netflix.

OK I found what you are talking about… but this actually didn’t solve the problem I have. The criteria here are still not applicable to my children.
Mind sharing what precisely you / your kids are missing?
The “Manage Recommendations” options are quite extensive – you’re not limited to enabling/disabling the default hubs but you can also publish regular/smart collections… that allows some very powerful hubs
