Plex HTPC feedback

This is the very issue I was having months ago, and ended up moving from my Flirc IR setup to using Bluetooth from the Harmony hub to the HTPC. That meant the Play & Pause keys started working. However, the ‘Info’ and ‘Exit’ keys still don’t work. I’ve tried mapping them in the Harmony sfw but it didn’t work.

I hope Plex don’t make changes to the remote function as ours works perfectly fine with our 650 remote and our K400+ keyboard.

Also works perfect with our flirc receiver.

The wife grabs either one and all the media buttons operate as expected.

Plex HTPC Version: 1.9. I’m experiencing frequent UI freezes when switching my A/V receiver on (or off?). When I turn it on, the sound works (UI sounds and video playback), but the screen is completely frozen. When I toggle between fullscreen and windowed, the screen updates to the current state but still frozen.

I am also experiencing this issue, each time after an update of my Graphics driver.

I also got these stuttering issues since day one of Plex HTPC.
First I thought it was related to the very low-end hardware, which i was running in my Player (AMD Athlon 200GE).

I was questioning whether it was hardware related, since there were never problems with the old Plex Media Player with this very same hardware.

Now i would exclude performance limitations of the hardware entirely since i have upgraded recently to a AMD Ryzen 5600G Processor, where i am also experiencing stuttering (though not as severe as with the Athlon).

Do I need to share additional information to get a response on this issue?

I’m not sure if it was a BIOS update or Plex update, but I can use hardware acceleration now. If anyone else is having audio issues, all the changes i tweaked were under the video menu. One other thing that seemed to cause problems was refresh rate switching which I just turned off and I’m not seeing any judder in my test file. I pass through an AVR which may do that automatically but I don’t know.

Could you please post your .json file, having the same play/pause issues.

Anyone else having similar issues?

Can anyone point to the right config file, still keen to switching dxva to one of the nvidea decoders

I looked into the logs for HTPC and it seemed that my issued stemmed from two things:

  1. It was changing audio device to defaults on each restart because for some reason the wasapi ID was changing on most reboots. I’ve done a clean install of my Nvidia drivers including the HD Audio driver and after 3 reboots that seems better. I’ll keep an eye on it

  2. The audio not starting was alluded to in the logs as being caused by the fact it couldn’t reserve exclusive mode on the audio device. I’ve since ticked the box on my sound device advanced settings and I’ve not seen that issue again. However, it’s worth noting that I have exclusive audio unticked in HTPC so I’m not sure why that was occuring. That much could be a bug?

Very strange. Definitely not the desired behavior. Glad you resolved it, at least for now.

Also strange. I know that the checkbox for exclusive audio does have an effect because it changes the audio sent when using PCM (I have the audio device in Windows configured to 8 channels. If I play stereo content without exclusive set, Windows sends 8 channel PCM to the AVR which is not the desired behavior. With exclusive it sends 2 channels).
Though maybe it needs exclusive mode for audio passthrough (because passthrough does take over the device completely). Were you using passthrough?

Yes, might have been that. I guess the issue I was having with it failing to play the video was that Windows or even just Plex in PCM mode was trying to play audio and as such it couldn’t run in passthrough. Did you still want the logs or is the workaround sufficient?

It sounds to me like passthrough was the issue which does require exclusivity on the audio device. No need for logs unless you think it is something different.

I’m experiencing an issue using remote control from Plexamp, where HTPC just starts dropping audio gradually and then eventually just locks up essentially, going into the screensaver mode. Also Plexamp will just lose control of HTPC and the playlist will disappear but the audio keeps playing.

I don’t like Plex HTPC at all. I need mouse interaction! I also need a detailed list view, and the ability to delete duplicate files (“Get Info” is missing.) Plex desktop player is perfect for me, but I also need the advanced options from Plex Media player. The only thing I like in Plex HTPC is the option to switch refresh rates automatically.

Plex Desktop Player works fine with a remote just like the web version. There really is no reason to disable mouse interaction. My HTPC is a normal desktop PC connected to my living room flat screen. I use a mouse often but can use a universal remote or a Bluetooth touchpad – whatever is closest. I am constantly organizing and deleting files from my collection, while I watch TV, so I need the flexible detail and table views. I have a 1000’s of documentaries so I need to see a list with episode descriptions in order to search for interesting content without having to open each page.

Early on in this long thread (March 2021), the topic of mouse support was brought up and I was also arguing for it. In my case, I want mouse support so I can actually use this with a touch screen.
Too bad this isn’t considered at all. So I’m sticking with the regular Windows client, even for my living room media PC (which has a touch screen and is connected to a projector).

100000000% this.

Plex HTPC is designed as a “10 foot interface”.

Suited for a remote control, not a mouse.

We use our Harmony 650 remote and K400+ keyboard without issue but it is designed for a remote (the trackpad works just fine for us).

Advanced options are done via PMS, which is designed for this use.

Plex HTPC is a player.

If you are up close and personal with a HTPC, then Plex HTPC is not the right choice for you. That is better left to Plex for Windows etc.

PMS does not let me set things like refresh rate matching. That’s in the client. And some important options are only in some clients, which is aggravating.

I was referring to the person who wanted detailed view. Library management is best done at server end. There are some options in the various clents/players but limited for good reason.

Refresh rate switching has to be in the client for obvious reasons.
